Backstage Grows Up: Spotify’s New Tools for Developer Portals

Spotify has announced a fresh wave of products for companies using Backstage, the open source framework for building internal developer portals (IDPs). The goal is straightforward: whether a team wants a fully bespoke portal or a plug-and-play solution, Spotify wants to remove friction from the adoption and operation of Backstage. The new offerings were unveiled during a roadmap webinar presented by Spotify’s Backstage team.

Why Internal Portals Matter More Than Ever

Software engineering has become a discipline of managing complexity. The past decade brought microservices, sprawling cloud tooling, and the DevOps mandate that teams own their code from deployment to security. The current wave of generative AI and code assistants has accelerated output — but it has also intensified software sprawl. Even without a paradigm shift, a merger or acquisition can double an engineering org and drop an entirely foreign tech stack in your lap.

This is precisely the problem Backstage was created to solve. What started as an internal software catalog at Spotify — a directory of services, websites, and libraries with an emphasis on ownership and discoverability — grew into a hub for all engineering activity. Thanks to its simple, extensible plugin architecture, Backstage evolved into a full-fledged IDP: a single pane of glass for tech infrastructure that promotes ownership, tech standards, and self-service while cutting down on silos, fragmentation, and unclear operational standards.

Proven Returns and a Thriving Ecosystem

Spotify’s internal data on Backstage usage points to measurable gains. According to a company study, frequent Backstage users are 2.3x more active on GitHub, create twice as many code changes in 17% less cycle time, and deploy software twice as often — with deployments lasting three times as long.

The open source project has also found traction beyond Spotify’s walls. Since its donation to the CNCF, Backstage has attracted over 2,200 contributors and more than 3,000 adopting companies. Spotify estimates that over two million people now use the product. The third-party ecosystem is healthy too, with consultancies like Frontside, Thoughtworks, and Adaptavist offering services, and vendors including Rootly, DX, LinearB, Snyk, and Swimm building new plugins.

An open platform solving for developer experience.

A Unique Feedback Loop

Spotify’s approach to Backstage products is informed by three distinct constituencies. First, its own demanding internal R&D teams, which rely on the software daily for everything from AI DJ features to spam defense. Second, the open source community, which includes thousands of contributors and a Discord channel with over 13,000 members. Third, enterprise customers and partners who apply Spotify-built plugins and support methods in environments quite different from Spotify’s own.

Lessons from all three groups feed directly into the products Spotify ships for Backstage.

Three New Ways to Supercharge Your Portal

Spotify acknowledged that there is no one-size-fits-all path to an IDP. Some companies need to build from scratch with heavy customization, others want something that works out of the box, and many fall somewhere in between. The company’s latest announcements cover that spectrum.

Our new product lineup addresses the range of adopter needs.

  • Spotify Plugins for Backstage: An updated bundle of Spotify-built plugins for custom portals, including Soundcheck, Role-Based Access Control, Skill Exchange, and Insights.
  • Spotify Enterprise Support for Backstage: Personalized support and consulting designed to help teams build, maintain, or customize their portal with Backstage experts.
  • Spotify Portal for Backstage: A full-featured IDP designed by Spotify that aims to be fast to set up and easy to maintain. The webinar includes a live demo showing how to get Portal running in under five minutes, with no coding required.
