Why Neurodiversity Belongs In the Design Process

Designing for neurodiversity is often treated as an edge case — something to address late in a project, or only if time allows. But people aren’t edge cases. Every person performs tasks and navigates the web differently, and designing for those differences tends to produce experiences that work better for everyone.

Neurodivergent needs are frequently overlooked in the design process, and when they are considered, it is often as an afterthought. Bringing accessibility and neurodiversity into the process early, rather than reverting or refining decisions later for compliance, leads to better outcomes for all users.

Neurodiversity vs. Neurodivergence

The terms are often confused, but they describe distinct concepts. Neurodiversity treats differences in thinking and experiencing the world as natural variations, not deficits. It distinguishes between neurotypical people, who see the world in a widely expected way, and neurodivergent people, who experience it differently — for example, those with ADHD, dyslexia, dyscalculia, synesthesia, or hyperlexia.

Estimates suggest that 15–40% of the population has neurodivergent traits. These traits can be innate (such as autism) or acquired (such as trauma), and they always exist on a spectrum with wide variation. Notably, a person with autism is not neurodiverse — they are neurodivergent.

Neurodivergent individuals often bring notable strengths: imagination and creativity, out-of-the-box thinking, exceptional attention, strong long-term memory, unique perspectives, accuracy, and a strong sense of justice. Living in a world that does not fully accept these differences can be exhausting, which is why many neurodivergent people also develop determination, resilience, and high levels of empathy.

Design With People, Not For Them

Designers can act as path-makers, building reliable routes that help people reach their goals without being blocked, confused, or locked out. That requires respecting that needs, tasks, and user journeys differ and evolve over time — and considering them from the very start of a project.

Instead of designing for a hypothetical average user, bring a diverse group into the process: people with accessibility needs, neurodivergent individuals, frequent and infrequent users, experts, and newcomers. Designing with this group, rather than for them, surfaces real challenges early and makes accessibility a natural part of the workflow.
