Aerial fiber robot exits Meta's lab

Meta has licensed its Bombyx aerial fiber deployment technology to Japanese robotics firm Hibot. The move hands off the project's next phase of product development, with Hibot set to mature the system from its research state into a deployable tool. "We see this as a great opportunity for our business expansion. It is also an honor to have been selected by Meta to carry on this exciting endeavor," said Michele Guarnieri, CEO of Hibot. "We will be moving with our current global partners, while seeking new and valuable alliances to help us leverage this great innovation."

Beyond fiber installation, Hibot plans to apply the underlying innovations to accelerate its existing infrastructure inspection work. The company also sees potential in areas like upgrading electrical grid infrastructure to support grid modernization and broader renewable energy adoption.

What makes Bombyx different

Fiber optic cables deliver capacity orders of magnitude greater than other transmission technologies, making them the backbone of the global internet. But while the cable itself is cheap, installation costs and complexity have limited widespread deployment, particularly in rural regions.

Bombyx is an evolution of an older technique called helical wrapping, in which a fiber cable is wound around an existing powerline conductor. Earlier versions of this approach struggled with three major hurdles: extended power outages required during installation, a cumbersome wrapping process, and the limited contiguous fiber spans that could be installed.

Bombyx was designed to solve those problems. A novel miniature fiber cable with a spool-free geometry lets long spans of fiber be packed into a small volume and spun around a conductor without counterweights. The system also introduces what Meta says is the first robot capable of traversing energized conductors and automatically crossing obstacles, such as pin and post insulators, which must be passed from above. That traversal relies on machine vision, custom sensors, thruster fans, drive/lift/rotation subsystems, and stabilization control that lets the robot balance and step over obstructions in the manner of a tightrope walker.

Meta had originally positioned Bombyx as a frontier tool to help bring underserved communities online, noting that rural areas continue to lag denser urban regions in connectivity. The project's success was always going to depend on collaboration between the engineers developing the technology and the linemen deploying it in the field. With Hibot taking over the work, the question now is how the company's productization roadmap will shape the technology for real-world, large-scale fiber deployments.
