Argo for Packets Reaches General Availability

Cloudflare has announced the general availability of Argo for Packets, extending its Argo optimization technology to Layer 3 IP traffic. The service is now available for customers using Magic Transit, Magic WAN, and Cloudflare for Offices, bringing an average 10% latency reduction to private network traffic.

Argo works by leveraging the global view Cloudflare has of Internet performance. Every day, the network carries trillions of requests and packets across its infrastructure. Because Cloudflare, its customers, and their end users are widely distributed, that traffic reveals how different parts of the Internet are performing at any given moment. Argo uses that picture to route each customer's traffic along the fastest available path through Cloudflare's network.

Previously, Argo optimized traffic at Layer 7 (application) and Layer 4 (protocol). With this GA release, Argo now applies the same optimization to Layer 3 packet routing for private networks. Cloudflare also notes that Argo's secure data plane provides additional encryption at Layer 3.,/p>

Why BGP Is Not Enough

Standard Internet routing relies on the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) to select the "shortest" path to a destination. But BGP's definition of shortest is based on network hops, not latency. A path with fewer AS hops can have higher latency or worse packet loss than a longer path. Without additional intelligence, traffic follows the BGP-selected route even when a slower path is suboptimal for the customer.

One fix is to build out more physical connectivity — more pipes and more network adjacency. Another is to buy expensive vendor MPLS networks. Both take time and money. Argo for Packets takes a different approach: it uses Cloudflare's existing global backbone plus traffic analytics to choose better paths dynamically, as congestion conditions change across the Internet.

For each customer, Argo evaluates every possible path from every Cloudflare data center back to the customer's origin. It combines existing Layer 4 traffic data with network analytics to determine the fastest, most available route at the IP layer. The service uses health check probes that Cloudflare already runs from every data center to each Magic Transit customer's origin. Those probes carry packet loss and latency measurements, and when combined with Layer 4 data, they build a map of one-way latencies across interconnected data centers. Argo then picks an entry location where the packet enters Cloudflare's network and an exit location that connects directly to the customer via a Cloudflare Network Interconnect.

Real-World Examples: More Than the Average Gains

During internal testing announced at Speed Week, Cloudflare measured an average 10% latency improvement globally. Real-world figures since GA match those internal numbers. But the average is across all paths worldwide, and customers with certain network topologies can see considerably more.

Consider a US-based company with locations in South Carolina, Oregon, and Los Angeles. Cloudflare previously outlined how Magic Transit alone improved this network's latency. Adding Argo for Packets improves latencies on every possible path in such a network, with the average percent improvement significantly exceeding the 10% global average.

Even higher gains appear in more complex networks. For a customer with locations in South Korea, the Philippines, Singapore, Osaka, and Hong Kong, Argo for Packets delivered a 17% latency reduction by optimizing the hardest paths to navigate, such as between South Korea, Osaka, and the Philippines. For multi-location customers, the product helps reduce long-tail latency, especially at the 90th percentile, by removing the extra delays introduced by the worst-performing Internet paths.

Complementing the Office Return

Argo for Packets pairs particularly well with Cloudflare for Offices, the initiative to provide private, secure, performant connectivity to office buildings worldwide. In the US network example above, if the company adds two new locations in Boston and Dallas, Argo for Packets brings those offices significant latency reductions on the private network from day one.
