A New Cohort of Open Source Maintainers Joins Vercel's Program

Vercel's Open Source Program, launched in April to provide maintainers with resources, credits, and support, is now welcoming its winter 2026 cohort. This follows the initial group selected through the spring 2025 cohort.

The new participants span a wide range of categories, including AI-native applications, developer infrastructure, design systems, and creative tooling. Here are the projects and the people building them.

Winter Cohort Highlights: Infrastructure, UI, and Developer Tooling

Community and Communication Tools

Answer Overflow tackles the problem of Discord content being invisible to search engines. The project indexes public server conversations and generates web pages from them, making the information discoverable. It reports 300+ communities using the service and 1.5 million monthly active users.

Cossistant takes an open source approach to customer support. Positioned as the "shadcn of support," it offers fully customizable components designed to match your product's look and feel rather than forcing a third-party widget style.

KDE Connect bridges Android devices and desktop environments. It provides file sharing, notification syncing, and remote control capabilities, supported by a global contributor base.

UI Component Libraries and Design Systems

Several projects in this cohort aim to expand the component library landscape, each with a distinct design philosophy. VengeanceUI focuses on composable, performance-first components built for real-world workflows. SmoothUI offers React components and UI blocks with animation and accessibility defaults baked in. Eldora UI combines TypeScript, Tailwind CSS, MDX, and Framer Motion to produce clean, documented building blocks.

A few libraries push back against the prevailing minimalism. Neobrutal UI delivers a component set with a bold, neobrutalist visual style. Wigggle UI brings OS-style widgets to the web on top of shadcn/ui foundations. useLayouts and ui-layouts both provide motion-rich, copy-paste-friendly animated components, with the latter offering 100+ interactive pieces for React and Next.js.

UI TripleD specializes in UI blocks and full pages for shadcn/ui and Base UI, powered by Framer Motion. It includes specialized generators for landing pages, backgrounds, and grids. heroicons-animated offers a library of animated Heroicons for React, Vue, and Svelte. Moving Icons is built natively for Svelte 5, providing animated icons for that ecosystem.

Developer Infrastructure and Tooling

Several projects target infrastructure and workflow pain points. hot-updater is a React Native OTA (Over-The-Air) update solution designed as a modern, vendor-agnostic alternative to CodePush. It aims to work across various infrastructure providers without lock-in.

GoDoxy is a high-performance reverse proxy and container orchestrator for self-hosters, focusing on simplifying service management. OutRay serves as an open source alternative to Ngrok, offering a tunneling tool for developers seeking cost control and transparent ownership.

Other tools address specific development tasks. APIs.guru is a directory and tooling hub for OpenAPI definitions, used in LLM-driven workflows. mapcn is a copy-paste-friendly map component library. data-peek is a lightweight database explorer for quick SQL inspection without heavy client overhead. GitFriend is an AI assistant for repository chat and automated README generation. Assertify uses AI to generate framework-specific, production-ready tests. Domainstack is a domain monitoring platform intended to replace spreadsheet-based portfolio tracking.

Takumi is positioned as a next/og alternative for JSX-to-Image conversion, with a feature set aimed at advanced use cases. Screenshot Studio is a fully in-browser canvas editor for design work, requiring no installs or backend.

Specialized Projects

Some entries address specific domains rather than general tooling. YourDigitalRights.org seeks to help users regain online privacy by automating data deletion requests to organizations. Ersilia Model Hub is a large open source repository of AI/ML models focused on drug discovery, run by a nonprofit aiming to support biomedical research in the Global South.

KanaDojo is a free, community-built Japanese learning platform. InsForge provides an AI-agent-first backend platform with a Supabase-style stack for spinning up production backends. Pett.ai is an AI companion app for caring for virtual pets. browser-ai is a TypeScript SDK for standardizing client-side AI integration across different in-browser model providers.

Finally, Pixjis (the PixiJS project) is a 2D rendering engine for the web, supporting interactive graphics for games, visualizations, and creative tools. itshover reports rapid early adoption.

Supporting the projects that power the internet

Vercel's Open Source Program provides sponsored credits and support to maintainers building the foundational tools developers rely on every day. The winter 2026 cohort marks another round of investment in the projects that keep the modern web running, from AI development frameworks to low-level rendering engines.

A key goal of each cohort is backing projects at different layers of the stack. This season's selection spans a range of languages and use cases, including tooling for financial data analysis, advanced rendering for design tools, and frameworks for building AI agents.

Several awardees focus on the performance and visibility of web applications. This includes tools for measuring and analyzing WebAssembly binary sizes as well as SDKs for improving frontend performance monitoring. Others help streamline the testing workflow, with projects that bring instant TypeScript execution to Node.js environments or enable type-safe RPC for serverless functions.

Beyond the code

By participating, maintainers receive access to infrastructure that helps their projects scale. In turn, the broader open source ecosystem benefits from the collaborative growth of these technologies, which are often integral to production systems at companies worldwide.
