GitHub launches its first virtual meetup for African developers
GitHub is bringing its virtual meetup series to Africa for the first time. The event takes place Tuesday, September 15th, from 3pm to 5pm WAT (7am to 9am PST), and is open to developers across the continent.
The free, fully online session covers the latest GitHub workflows, new feature announcements, and practical guidance for contributing to open source projects. Attendees will also have dedicated time for discussions and networking with GitHub staff and fellow developers.
Speakers and sessions
Omoju Miller, technical advisor to GitHub's CEO, will host the event and walk through recently released GitHub features that can improve productivity in daily work and open source contributions. Xavier René-Corail from the GitHub Security Lab joins her to discuss community-driven security.
The meetup also features a lineup of guest speakers from the local and wider developer ecosystem:
- Prosper Otemuyiwa, co-founder of Eden, on shipping quick releases with GitHub Packages.
- Samson Goddy, co-founder of Open Source Community Africa, on why developers should care about open source.
- Cobus Bernard from AWS, covering GitHub Actions and provisioning infrastructure with Terraform.
- Lawrence Muthoga from Microsoft, sharing tools and strategies for remote development with VS Code.
Registration is available at github.co/meetup-africa. Given the turnout at GitHub's recent virtual meetup for Latin America, organizers expect strong interest in this first Africa-focused edition.
