Design is a shared language, not a job title

For many designers, the craft is inseparable from identity. It shapes how they see the world, communicate ideas, and approach problems. Yet design itself isn't something any individual or department can claim ownership over. It's a mindset and operating system that anyone—regardless of role—can adopt to improve their work.

Watching hundreds of teams and thousands of individuals build products over the years reveals a clear pattern: even the most skilled practitioners hit limits working alone. Teams equipped with shared design knowledge don't just ship better user experiences; they create more effective processes and systems. The real future of design lies in making it an organization-wide practice, but that direction requires understanding where the discipline has been.

From hardware genius to interface gold standard

Design has always been the bridge between raw technology and human usability. In 1979, Sony's engineering team miniaturized components from its Pressman tape recorder, removed the recording feature, and boosted sound quality. The result was the foundation of the Walkman, a device that would define the gadget era of the '90s. But its success wasn't purely technological.

Kozo Ohsone, then general manager of Sony's tape recorder division, field-tested early prototypes during business trips. His user-centric insights pushed the device toward greater portability and usability, eventually leading to social features like dual headphone jacks and a "hotline" button for conversation while listening. The original TPS-L2 also broke from the standard black, silver, or gray electronics palette with its blue and silver color scheme accented by an orange button. Interface design, accessibility, and user-driven research were central to making the Walkman a cultural icon as much as a product.

By the mid-2000s, the focus shifted from hardware to the software powering it. Apple's MacBook, iPod, and iPhone demonstrated impressive engineering, but the software defined the experience. The launch of the App Store triggered a new economy of mobile software, sparking a race toward innovative, well-designed experiences. Web 2.0 and apps pushed interface design forward rapidly, freed from the constraints of physical components.

The shift from skeuomorphism to systems

Early digital design leaned on metaphor. Skeuomorphism—where digital components imitate physical objects—used familiar buttons and sliders to ease the transition to digital interfaces. Over time, these patterns were codified into standards like Apple's Human Interface Guidelines (2007) and Google's Material Design (2014), and reinforced by frameworks such as Atomic Design.

Alongside interface conventions came design thinking, the practice IDEO CEO Tim Brown describes as "a human-centered approach to innovation that draws from the designer's toolkit to integrate the needs of people, the possibilities of technology, and the requirements for business success." While design thinking has existed for decades, software companies in the late 2010s embraced it as a framework for tackling user needs more directly, increasingly treating design as an organization-wide priority.

The new competitive frontier

Technology has become commoditized. Amazon, Alphabet, and Microsoft found that productizing the infrastructure behind their success—through AWS, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure—was highly profitable. AI followed suit: services like ChatGPT, Claude, and Midjourney let anyone add intelligence to their products. This cycle of invention followed by commodification brings productivity gains but no lasting edge. When everyone has access to the same building blocks, design becomes the differentiating factor.

Design today spans far beyond product interfaces. It includes user experience, design systems, and design thinking, now complemented by computational design—using data, algorithms, and AI to create at massive scale. Yet most organizations still haven't applied the full potential of design across the business.

Rising complexity, higher standards

Digital products have exploded in scale and complexity. Super apps like LINE, Grab, and WeChat pack ride-hailing, e-commerce, and more into single platforms. Users expect seamless experiences across devices, with polished visuals, true accessibility, customization, and localization as baseline requirements. Meeting these expectations demands a far more systematic approach than in previous eras. Design systems are now standard, and design goes through the same validation as code, including linting, accessibility checks, and stress-testing with real multilingual data.

Meanwhile, generative AI tools push teams to rethink both workflows and the products they build. Designers face pressure to update their skills and define what good looks like in an AI-driven landscape. Technology literacy already separates leading organizations from the rest; the next step is pairing it with design literacy, an understanding and application of design principles that extends beyond formal design roles.

Organizations that cultivate design literacy broadly—through transparent processes, inclusive feedback loops, and shared values—gain advantages that are difficult to copy. The most successful teams treat design not as a trend or a checklist but as core to their mission. Those that believe more design, in more places, leads to better outcomes are the ones that turn design into lasting culture rather than activity.

Design is a tool, not a job title

Over the last few decades, design has cemented itself as a core business function. Terms like user experience and design thinking are now standard vocabulary in boardrooms and team meetings alike. Yet for all that progress, the practice of design is still mostly treated as the domain of people with "designer" in their job title.

That's a missed opportunity. When design thinking spreads beyond a dedicated team and becomes something everyone in an organization practices, the result is broader innovation and more surprising breakthroughs. The next stage of design's evolution depends on equipping non-designers to treat design as a practical tool rather than a professional label.
