Kids Are Not Small Adults
Children begin using the web between the ages of three and five. Their first learned interactions are typically swipe, scroll, video controls, and pressing "Home." But designing for them means understanding that their cognitive abilities, attention spans, and motivations differ dramatically from adults—and from each other, depending on age.
Children lose focus quickly. When bored, they quit; when they can't progress fast enough, they move to something else. They require steady achievements. To support habit formation and learning, your design must acknowledge and reward small wins through progress tracking and gamification.
The way children play reveals a lot about their preferences—what they choose, how long they stay, and when they switch. Notably, children rarely get disappointed when something fails; they simply move on to another activity or game. As author Deb Gelman notes in Design for Kids, understanding this behavior is key.
Testing is non-negotiable. Co-designing with children can uncover insights adults would never anticipate, while involving parents helps establish reliable guardrails. If your product is fun, smart, and safe, parents become your most effective marketers.
Stay Within a Two-Year Age Band
"Children" is a broad label covering wildly different abilities and behaviors. The gaps between the 3–5, 6–8, and 9–12 age groups are vast—covering navigation patterns, comprehension, and communication styles alike. A useful best practice is to design for a maximum of a two-year age range, ensuring usability and messaging match your actual audience.
Pitch the Parents Too
Designing for children inherently means designing for their parents. Parents are the most stringent critics you will encounter. They write reviews, file complaints, and rate harshly—no exceptions. This behavior makes sense, given what they need from a product.
Parents demand safety guarantees, regulatory compliance, and certifications, and they expect visible evidence that you treat privacy and third-party integrations seriously. Many are willing to pay a premium for apps if it excludes advertising. They prefer recommendations from teachers, educators, and healthcare professionals. They also require robust parental controls—for time limits, content access, permissions, and ground rules.
Rodrigo Seoane highlights a deeper concern: most children's products rely heavily on extrinsic motivation, using reward models for short-term engagement. But as a core mechanic, this is problematic, reducing cognitive capacity and blocking intrinsic motivation over time. Design for intrinsic motivation wherever feasible.
Practical UX Guidelines
- Use large fonts (18–19px) and minimum tap targets of 75×75px.
- Pick typefaces close to how children learn to write.
- Convert text into visuals, icons, sounds, and characters.
- Skip bottom-positioned buttons—children hit them by accident constantly.
- Provide immediate feedback for every action.
- Show age-appropriate content; don't patronize your audience.
- Make advertisements and promotions distinguishable—children cannot tell them apart from real content.
- Remember that your real users are the children; your paying customers are the parents. Optimize for both.
- Include parental controls by default: time, access, rules, and permissions.
