Vercel closes nine-figure Series C as adoption accelerates

Vercel has announced an additional $102 million in Series C funding at a valuation above $1 billion, bringing the company's total raised to $163 million. The round is led by existing investor Bedrock Capital, with participation from Accel, CRV, Geodesic Capital, Greenoaks Capital, and GV. New investors include 8VC, Flex Capital, GGV, Latacora, Salesforce Ventures, and Tiger Global.

The announcement arrives alongside fresh growth metrics across the company's platform and its underlying framework, Next.js. Vercel reports that traffic to sites and applications served on its edge network has doubled over the past six months, while weekly deployments have grown fourfold. The enterprise customer base has tripled in the same period.

Adoption of Next.js, the React framework originally created by Vercel founder Guillermo Rauch, is also climbing. Weekly downloads on npm rose 50%, from 4.1 million to 6.2 million, and the number of homepages in the Alexa top 10,000 built with Next.js grew by the same percentage.

The funding round follows a recent virtual event co-hosted with the Google Chrome team, which drew more than 65,000 developers, designers, product managers, and technology leaders. It was the second such community gathering for the Next.js ecosystem.

Vercel's customer roster spans multiple segments, from startups to large enterprises. The company cites HashiCorp, GitHub, IBM, McDonald's, Facebook, Patreon, and Scale as customers, noting that these organizations use the platform not just for hosting and developer tooling, but to let non-engineering stakeholders participate in shaping the end-user experience.

The company frames its funding and growth as part of a broader shift in how websites are built and delivered. Vercel's stated mission is to give teams the ability to develop, collaborate, and ship web experiences rapidly, and it remains focused on tools and infrastructure aimed at accelerating the web as a whole.
