Making Personas Feel Like People
An Ideal Customer Profile (ICP) is supposed to make a customer feel real, but the static diagrams and story templates typically used to build them often miss the mark. Sara Clayton, lead product designer on Dropbox Replay, found that flat assets weren't enough for her team's work. Her ICPs centered on video editors, audio engineers, and production managers—people who live in front of timelines and mixing boards, not in generic corporate headshots.
Clayton's team eventually landed on slide decks that told stories from the ICP's point of view, but they relied on a single, recycled headshot. "I've always desired more color when we talk about these narratives," she says. "We've lost what a media producer looks like in their element. What if we put them in a more realistic setting?"
She found an answer in Figma Weave. Starting with a headshot and a single text prompt, Clayton generated an image of her media producer persona sitting in front of a Premiere Pro screen—a far more convincing scene than any stock photo could provide. When a colleague flagged that the outfit wasn't quite right, she uploaded a reference image to iterate. That hands-on control is what sets Weave apart for her.
"It's just so much clearer to see the iterations. When you're in Gemini or ChatGPT, you don't have as much control over the different variables."
Higher Fidelity, Faster
What took a colleague recording a quick skit to demonstrate a feature can now be done in under two minutes. For Clayton, Weave offers a direct route back to authenticity: "The goal is trying to be more human again with these things. Now, we can amp up storytelling and bring personas into higher fidelity." The payoff is practical as well as creative—more believable personas give Dropbox's carefully constructed ICPs a real chance of influencing product strategy.
The template Clayton used is available to try in Figma Weave. Additional persona-focused templates can generate a character inside a car, create a professional character reference sheet, or use variables to swap in different outfits for the same persona.
