Instant Payouts gets a broader reach and simpler setup
Cash flow remains a critical pain point for small businesses and gig workers. According to Stripe's data, 82% of small businesses report difficulty accessing cash, and 90% of gig workers say they would use instant payouts if their platform offered the option. Stripe's Instant Payouts feature—which lets connected accounts pay out their available balance immediately for a small fee—has been a key tool for platforms like Lyft, Instacart, and Lugg to attract and retain users while creating new revenue streams.
Stripe is now rolling out a set of improvements aimed at making Instant Payouts programs easier to launch, operate, and monetize. The updates include no-code setup options, direct payouts to bank accounts, and streamlined fee management.
No-code and embedded interfaces
Previously, Connect users had to custom-build a user interface using Stripe APIs to offer Instant Payouts to their connected accounts. That barrier is now lower: platforms can activate the feature by toggling a setting in the Dashboard, or embed an Instant Payouts UI directly into their product with a few lines of code. The new no-code and embedded interfaces are available for select users by request.
Bank account payouts expand eligibility
Instant Payouts previously required a debit card on file, a restriction that limited usage. Stripe reports that only 20% of US small businesses and gig workers using its platform have a debit card on file. Now, users in the US with an eligible bank account will be able to receive instant payouts directly to that account. The feature is being rolled out now and will be available to all US Instant Payouts users later this summer. Stripe notes it can pay out to more than 1,000 banks.
Simplified pricing and reporting
Platforms can now set pricing for Instant Payouts usage directly from the Dashboard, rather than building monetization tools via Stripe APIs. When a connected account initiates an instant payout, Stripe automatically collects the additional fee from that user and deposits it into the platform's balance. Dashboard reporting has also been updated so platforms can see the fees they've collected through Instant Payouts, making reconciliation more straightforward.
Updated documentation and best practices
For platforms ready to integrate now, Stripe has revised its Instant Payouts documentation to clarify the integration process. The company says the time to a live Instant Payouts program will be shorter for platforms building their own UX with Stripe APIs, and it has added recommendations and best practices for managing a program.
When it's time to cut paychecks and complete payroll, the difference between hours or days makes a big difference in their cash flow needs. Instant Payouts is one of those things the old model couldn't do. Stripe's modern way of real-time everything makes it possible. It's so intuitive for a user to receive their money that way.
