GitHub Enterprise Importer Incident: July 2025 Availability Report
GitHub recorded a single availability incident in July 2025, affecting GitHub Enterprise Importer (GEI) for over five hours.
Incident Timeline and Root Cause
From approximately 21:41 UTC on July 28 to 03:15 UTC on July 29, GitHub Enterprise Importer was unable to process migrations. The root cause was traced to a GEI infrastructure component that was inadvertently decommissioned during routine internal maintenance. The component could not be restored to its prior configuration, forcing engineers to provision new resources to resolve the outage.
Post-incident improvements are focused on three areas: enabling easier recovery of infrastructure, expanding unit test coverage, and strengthening validation through the use of test data.
Action Required: Updated IP Allow Lists
Due to the infrastructure changes, customers using GEI must update their IP allow lists to include new ranges. These changes apply to the following, if IP allow lists are enabled:
- The IP allow list on your destination github.com organization or enterprise
- For migrations from github.com, the IP allow list on your source github.com organization or enterprise
- For migrations from GitHub Enterprise Server, Bitbucket Server, or Bitbucket Data Center, the allow list on your configured Azure Blob Storage or Amazon S3 storage account
- For migrations from Azure DevOps, the allow list on your Azure DevOps organization
The following new GEI IP ranges must be added to all applicable allow lists:
- 20.99.172.64/28
- 135.234.59.224/28
The following IP ranges are no longer in use by GEI and can be safely removed:
- 40.71.233.224/28
- 20.125.12.8/29
