Cloudflare One is a single control plane for securing an organization’s data centers, offices, and devices. The service leverages the same network architecture that Cloudflare has developed over the past decade to address its own growth and security challenges. The core premise is that traditional networking solutions—built around centralized choke points and specialized appliances—do not fit the reality of globally distributed teams and remote work.

Cloudflare’s network was designed to meet traffic close to its source. With data centers in over 200 cities and more than 100 countries, and a total capacity of 42 Tbps, the company processes user traffic near its point of origin rather than backhauling it to a regional hub. This distribution is consistent across the network: the same software-defined services run on every server in every location, so a user in South America connecting via Cloudflare Gateway is handled by a local data center, not routed elsewhere for processing.

Scale Without Vendor Lock-In

The network is built entirely on commodity hardware, which lets Cloudflare expand capacity without depending on a single hardware vendor or facing supply chain constraints. Because all security and routing functions are software-based, there is no specialized third-party equipment in the path. This approach keeps development and support in-house while reducing operational complexity.

The efficiency gained from this software-centric design also drives down costs, which Cloudflare passes on to customers across all plan tiers, including free users. Every new data center that comes online automatically runs the full suite of services, meaning all customers benefit from each expansion.

Interconnection and Routing

Cloudflare maintains direct interconnection with over 8,800 networks globally, including major ISPs, cloud providers, and enterprises. This breadth is particularly important in an era of widespread remote work, where employees connect from home networks rather than controlled office environments. High-quality eyeball-to-data-center connectivity helps avoid the congestion that can arise with providers that have poor peering arrangements.

For organizations that want a dedicated path, Cloudflare Network Interconnect (CNI) provides physical or virtual connections to Cloudflare’s network. The company is colocated with many enterprises in peering facilities, making CNI deployment straightforward. Five interconnect platform partners offer additional flexibility through software-defined layer 2 connections, and direct peering with major cloud providers eases hybrid and cloud migrations.

Rather than relying on expensive MPLS point-to-point links, Cloudflare routes traffic over the public Internet using its own software techniques. The Cloudflare Global Private Backbone supplements these methods to improve performance and reliability where conditions demand it. Because the network uses transit from a wide variety of providers, most users already have high-quality connectivity to Cloudflare without any special configuration.

Visibility and Intelligence

The diversity of traffic flowing through Cloudflare’s network—spanning CDN, security, and DNS services—provides operational intelligence that informs threat detection. Analyzing this traffic allows Cloudflare to identify attack trends before they become widespread. These insights are surfaced to customers through tools like Cloudflare Radar and Cloudflare One Intel.

DNS tunneling detection is one example of this capability. By modeling what normal DNS queries look like at scale, Cloudflare can automatically block suspicious queries that might indicate data exfiltration from devices.

Network-wide visibility also enables smart routing decisions. Cloudflare monitors the state of the Internet across carriers to detect congestion and automatically shift traffic to the fastest reliable path. This capability is the basis for Magic Transit, which adds minimal latency despite being in the traffic path, and Argo Smart Routing, which improves web asset performance by an average of 30%. Argo Smart Routing for Magic Transit is planned as a future addition to Cloudflare One.

The network’s reach, standardized software stack, and deep interconnection are the foundation for Cloudflare One’s security and performance benefits. As both the network and the products running on it continue to expand, those advantages will extend further across enterprise traffic.
