Cloudflare Closes Out the Decade With Its 200th City

Cloudflare has reached a new network milestone: 200 cities across 90+ countries. The expansion adds capacity in regions that were previously underserved, and each new location strengthens the security, performance, and reliability of the more than 20 million Internet properties that rely on the network.

During the final quarter of 2019, Cloudflare turned up seven new data centers across South Asia, the Pacific, and the Caribbean. These include firsts for several countries:

  • Chattogram & Dhaka, Bangladesh. These are Cloudflare's first data centers in Bangladesh, extending better network coverage to the country's 161 million residents.
  • Honolulu, Hawaii, USA. One of the most remote cities in the world, Honolulu previously forced Hawaiian users to connect to servers roughly 2,400 miles away. The new presence also benefits Pacific Island nations, as Hawaii is a hub for submarine cables in the region.
  • Adelaide, Australia. Despite being Australia's fifth-largest city, Adelaide is often skipped in interconnection planning. This data center, Cloudflare's seventh in Australasia, establishes a local presence in the region's UTC+9:30 time zone.
  • Thimphu, Bhutan. Thimphu marks Cloudflare's first Bhutanese data center and the seventh SAARC country on the network.
  • St George's, Grenada. The new data center joins the Grenada Internet Exchange (GREX), the first non-profit Internet Exchange (IX) in the English-speaking Caribbean.

Cloudflare Expanded to 200 Cities in 2019

The journey from Cloudflare's 2010 launch has seen a steady shift from core Internet hubs toward edge locations and partnerships with local ISPs. In addition to the 35 cities added during 2019, the company also expanded existing data centers. Looking ahead to 2020, Cloudflare intends to keep pushing its network and edge-computing capabilities closer to end users across the globe.
