Apricot Subsea Cable Aims to Add Resilience and Capacity Across Asia-Pacific

A new subsea cable project is set to strengthen internet connectivity across the Asia-Pacific region. The Apricot system, developed through a partnership of regional and global telecom companies, is designed to deliver increased capacity, redundancy, and reliability to a part of the world experiencing rapid data growth.

The cable spans roughly 12,000 kilometers and will connect Japan, Taiwan, Guam, the Philippines, Indonesia, and Singapore. Its design supports a flexible architecture that allows operators to allocate trunk and branch capacity as needed, rather than locking in a fixed configuration.

Apricot is expected to go live in 2024 with an initial design capacity of more than 190 terabits per second. That throughput is intended to handle rising data traffic from expanding 4G, 5G, and broadband services, while also complementing other recent cable deployments such as the Echo and Bifrost systems.

The project remains subject to regulatory approvals, but represents another step in the effort to expand global network infrastructure. That ongoing build-out aims to serve the more than 3.5 billion people who rely on internet services each month, by leveraging cooperative models where multiple partners share both the cost of building scale infrastructure and the technical expertise required to operate it.
