Four Years of CSS Data Takes Shape
The State of CSS survey is back for its fourth edition, and with it comes the promise of real historical insight. Running since 2019, the survey now has enough accumulated data to track trends across frameworks, feature adoption, and learning habits — three years of results already confirmed that TailwindCSS has become a major player among frameworks and CSS variables have crossed into mainstream usage. The survey has also consistently highlighted developer desires for features like Container Queries and a parent selector, both of which have since arrived.
A New Lead and New Questions
Lea Verou has joined the team behind the survey and is leading this year's edition. Under her direction, the survey introduces several enhancements, including more opportunities for open-ended responses, questions focused on browser inconsistencies, and a comparison between time spent writing CSS versus JavaScript.
The survey results are not just for community curiosity. Browser vendors use the feedback to help shape which features they prioritize for implementation, making participation a direct way to influence the platform's roadmap.
The survey is open until October 20, and responses can be submitted at the official State of CSS site.
