2020 State of CSS Survey Now Open
The 2020 State of CSS Survey is officially underway, inviting developers to contribute their experiences and preferences for another year of data. Last year’s edition already surfaced notable trends, including the rapid uptake of features like calc() and CSS custom properties. Respondents also broadly reported that writing CSS is enjoyable, even as reliance on CSS-in-JS solutions continues to grow.
Some results from last year were less surprising: VS Code stood out as the preferred editor, flexbox dominated as the layout model of choice, and both BEM and Sass emerged as the most adopted technologies with the highest satisfaction rates. Survey co-creator Sacha Greif previously joined Chris and Dave on the ShopTalk Show to break down those findings in greater detail.
Now, with the 2020 edition live, the survey expands its scope to cover newer features and technologies, including subgrid, user preference media queries, logical properties, line-clamp(), min(), and max(), among others. Each additional year of responses helps surface more meaningful trends over time, so participation is encouraged—and the survey site itself offers a few useful CSS tricks worth a look.
