A Decade of Launch-Day Giveaways

Cloudflare's Birthday Week began as a way to mark the company's September 27, 2010 launch — but instead of collecting gifts, the team uses the occasion to ship new products. Ten years in, that tradition continues with a full week of announcements. Before peeking at what's coming, here's a look back at how the previous editions reshaped both the company and the wider internet.

Milestones From Earlier Birthday Weeks

The first Birthday Week, in 2011, delivered automatic IPv6 support — the first in a long series of efforts aimed at democratizing access to cutting-edge technology. That pattern repeated across subsequent years as Cloudflare rolled out support for SPDY, HTTP/2, TLS 1.3, QUIC, HTTP/3, DNS-over-HTTPS, DNS-over-TLS and WebP image compression. By the second birthday, the service had crossed 500,000 domains; twelve months later that figure had tripled.

2014's headline offering was Universal SSL, which put free SSL certificates within reach of every customer and, in one move, dramatically expanded the share of the web served over HTTPS. Related security work followed: Automatic HTTPS Rewrites, Encrypted SNI, and a Certificate Transparency log.

Three years later, the 2017 Birthday Week introduced Unmetered DDoS Mitigation, the Cloudflare Stream video platform and Geo Key Manager, which gives customers control over where their private SSL keys are stored. It also marked the debut of Cloudflare Workers, the serverless platform that quickly became a staple of the company's product lineup.

In 2018, Cloudflare entered the registrar business with an "at cost" offering called Cloudflare Registrar. That same week brought the Bandwidth Alliance, a cooperative effort to reduce or eliminate cloud data egress fees, plus support for QUIC and Workers KV, a globally distributed key-value store for Workers.

Last year's week focused on the edge-to-device gap and on making the platform's impact measurable. WARP Plus arrived to secure and accelerate the "last mile" between a user's device and Cloudflare's network, while Browser Insights gave customers visibility into how individual Cloudflare features affect site performance. Bot management gained a new tier with Bot Defend Mode, and Workers Sites extended the Workers model to entire static websites.

What the 10th Anniversary Will Bring

Cloudflare is promising a week of updates that touch on serverless, observability, security and performance. The rough schedule:

  • Monday — A rethinking of serverless, backed by two new Cloudflare Workers enhancements. The stated inspiration is the classic computer science dictum that programs require both algorithms and data structures, not just functions.
  • Tuesday and Wednesday — Observability, both for individual internet properties and for the internet as a whole, with an emphasis on privacy. The new functionality is designed to show what's happening without relying on user tracking.
  • Thursday — A security-focused day, with a new service aimed at defending the non-user-facing components of websites and applications.
  • Friday — Performance day, featuring one-click improvements that tap into Cloudflare's 200-plus-city network to accelerate static and dynamic content.

The company's tenth Birthday Week launches Monday. This time, the goal is not just to celebrate a decade of releases, but to keep the opening-week tradition of shipping something new.
