Removing the account barrier from FigJam sessions

Figma has rolled out Open sessions, a feature that lets people join a FigJam file without needing to register for an account. The goal is to cut the friction that occasional participants face when joining a workshop, interview, or cross-functional meeting so that they can start contributing immediately.

The feature was born from observing the range of ways teams use FigJam: recurring meetings, client workshops, and research interviews all have different attendance patterns. For someone who only joins occasionally, being forced to create an account can delay the whole session. Open sessions removes that step entirely.

How Open sessions work

With Open sessions, anyone with the link can jump straight into the file. Hosts retain control over when a session is open and how long it lasts. By default, visitors are removed and every Open session ends after 24 hours. You can close a session early if you no longer need it, or start a new session for the same file later.

Open sessions is best suited to one-off jams, whether you are bringing together a large group or working one-on-one. Common use cases include:

  • Workshops: Remote client workshops and user research sessions become smoother when participants do not have to sign up before they can engage with the material.
  • Interviews: Share the file link with candidates ahead of time so they know what to expect. For technical interviews, the CoderPad widget can be embedded directly in the jam.
  • Cross-functional team meetings: Include leaders and stakeholders from across the company when running team meetings, project retrospectives, or brainstorming sessions.

Although a 24-hour session covers most temporary collaboration scenarios, longer-running or recurring work may still call for full accounts on the platform. Open sessions is designed as the low-friction entry point, not a replacement for persistent collaboration.

Availability

Open sessions is available on all FigJam plans while the product remains in beta. Starting February 1, 2022, it will become a feature of the FigJam Professional and Organization plans. A demo is available for teams that want to see how to run effective jam sessions using the new feature.
