Why Technical Interviews Feel So Hard
Technical interviews are rarely pleasant. The process is opaque, the stakes feel high, and there’s no single authoritative guide that walks you from the first recruiter call through to offer negotiation. After years of failing interviews myself — and eventually passing Google’s and landing my dream role at Spotify — I realized how much I’d learned the hard way.
I also realized how privileged my computer science degree made me. For self-taught developers, the barriers are even higher. That’s why I’ve spent the last year building resources to make data structures and algorithms approachable for everyone, and why I’ve collected the most common mistakes candidates make — so you can avoid them.
Remote Interview Prep
With companies now hiring remotely across the globe, more candidates than ever are navigating virtual interviews for the first time. A few practical steps can prevent avoidable panic:
- Arrive early. Nothing ruins an interview faster than discovering you need to download drivers for a meeting app you've never used. Set up an account in advance and run a test call with a friend to confirm the software works and you're comfortable with the controls.
- Use headphones. Headphones cut background noise and make it easier to hear your interviewers clearly.
- Charge your computer. Live coding and video calls drain batteries fast. If possible, keep your computer plugged in throughout the interview.
- Test your camera. A check of your video frame before the interview helps you spot anything unprofessional in the background. A virtual background can also help if your space is less than ideal.
What To Expect From The Process
One reason technical interviews feel so intimidating is that there’s no industry-wide standard. Each company structures its process differently. Still, most follow a recognizable path.
Recruiter Phone Interview
Your first conversation is with a recruiter who will walk you through the role, the company, and what the interview process looks like. Don’t treat this as a formality — you need to show genuine enthusiasm for the position, or the recruiter may not move you forward. If you're applying to multiple jobs, keep a spreadsheet of each role, company, recruiter contact, and any notes you gather. Reviewing this before each call ensures you arrive well-informed and leave a solid first impression.
Technical Screening
After a successful recruiter call, you’ll likely face a technical screening. This might be a live interview or an asynchronous challenge completed on a platform with a time limit. The goal is to confirm you have the baseline programming knowledge needed for the role — it’s a cost-effective way to narrow the candidate pool before expensive on-site interviews. Expect to write code here, so feel comfortable in your core programming language.
Take-Home Projects
Another common step is a coding project to complete on your own time. These are polarizing. On the plus side, you can showcase your work in a more natural environment with tools you like. On the downside, take-homes can become free labor if a company uses them to generate work. And they place unfair strain on candidates with family commitments or other jobs, who simply may not have the hours available.
If you get a take-home you can't dedicate real time to, ask the recruiter if an alternative exists. It’s also reasonable to ask whether the company compensates candidates for this work — some do, and all arguably should.
On-Site Interviews
The final stage is typically a series of interviews that used to happen in person but are now usually held virtually. These are the most stressful, often requiring you to take time off your current job. Expect three or four back-to-back sessions, generally covering one process-and-values interview (collaboration style, conflict resolution) plus coding interviews. Take breaks between sessions and decompress — you'll perform better if you’re not carrying stress from the previous interview.
After each stage, carve out time to reflect. Which interviews were hardest? Ask recruiters for feedback when it's available, and let that direct your studying. Also pay attention to how the process made you feel. Were the interviewers warm and professional? Would this be an environment where you could thrive? Remember that the interview goes both ways.
The Seven Mistakes Candidates Make
1. Not Communicating Effectively
Technical interviews are about measuring your communication and problem-solving skills — not necessarily whether you produce a perfect, optimal solution on your first try. If you treat the interview as a conversation rather than an exam, you’re more likely to communicate well.
One subtle trap here is cultural. Some people communicate in a low-context style: explicit, direct, redundant, and best interpreted literally. Others use high-context communication: subtle, implied, and hidden between the lines. During a technical interview, you want to bias toward low-context communication.
If you need a moment to think, say so. If you need help, just ask for it. Candidates are regularly dropped from the process not because their code was wrong, but because they failed to communicate clearly.
2. Not Admitting When You Don’t Know
Interviewers don’t expect you to know everything. Pretending you do — or “BS-ing” your way through a question — undermines trust and makes you look dishonest. It’s far better to be honest and humble. If you’re unsure, say so, then offer an educated guess: “Honestly, I’m not totally sure. If I had to reason through it, I’d say…” People want to hire real humans who can acknowledge gaps in their knowledge.
3. Cramming The Night Before
Interviewing is a skill, and like any skill, it takes practice. Yet many of us still find ourselves scrambling the night before. Here’s why that fails: cramming only encodes information into short-term memory, which means the material evaporates quickly after the interview. You’ll also be more likely to regurgitate memorized facts rather than genuinely reason through problems — something interviewers catch quickly.
Spacing out your preparation across weeks is far more effective for long-term retention. And counter-intuitively, mixing topics (or “context-switching”) while you study makes recall harder in the moment — but ultimately strengthens it. 4. Memorizing Code For Algorithms & Data Structures
Many candidates feel pressured to memorize solutions for coding challenges. But in practice, you’re unlikely to need to write a complex algorithm from scratch. Reciting memorized code is an obvious and undesirable strategy — interviewers can tell when a candidate doesn’t deeply understand what they’re outputting.
Instead, focus on understanding the concepts behind the common approaches. For example, if you’re asked to sort an array, you should know that a divide-and-conquer approach like merge sort or quick sort is likely a strong choice — and if you understand why, you can derive the code yourself.
Note too that most coding interviews are conducted in the foundational programming language, not in a framework like React or Vue. Make sure your fundamentals are solid before you worry about your favorite library or tooling.
Mistake #5: Treating Culture Fit As An Afterthought
Most candidates pour their energy into data structures and algorithms, but that emphasis shouldn’t come at the expense of other interview rounds. A “culture fit” or collaboration interview is designed to assess how you work within a team and handle conflict. Common prompts include:
“Tell me about a time a project you were working on failed. Why did it fail and how did you move forward?”
or
“Tell me about a time you had a conflict with a team member. How did you resolve it?”
Write down your responses and practice them aloud—not to sound rehearsed, but to be succinct and avoid rambling. Keep answers to a few sentences, maintain eye contact, and watch your body language. Fidgeting can undermine an otherwise solid answer.
Mistake #6: Aiming For The Optimal Solution From The First Line
Unless you are fully certain about a code challenge’s most efficient approach, don’t feel pressured to start there. That mindset often leads to getting stuck and burning valuable time. Instead, begin with a workable solution and say:
“I know this isn’t the most performant solution but I would like to get a working solution and refactor it for performance later in the interview.”
Interviewers will appreciate your honesty and your awareness of performance trade-offs. Making steady progress on a simpler solution also builds momentum; small wins during an interview can do a lot for your confidence and your final performance.
Mistake #7: Neglecting Core Programming Foundations
Front-end candidates often spend interview prep time on JavaScript while letting HTML and CSS lapse. That’s a problem because interview processes increasingly test foundational knowledge—and coding exercises are given in foundational languages. You’ll be asked to write in JavaScript, not React or Vue.js, so it pays to keep your base skills sharp rather than diving deep only into frameworks and libraries.
Moving From Interview To Offer
Most people feel anxiety about the technical interview process, but preparing for these common pitfalls can make a meaningful difference in whether you get an offer.
If an offer comes through, negotiation is a legitimate next step. Salary, title, equity, signing bonus, working hours and paid time off are all on the table. Before you negotiate, research what someone in the same role and geographic region earns—sites like Glassdoor are a good starting point.
Keep in mind the recruiter works within constraints and may not have room to raise base salary. In that case, asking for a signing bonus or equity is reasonable—but be ready for them to decline. Frame your case around what you specifically bring to the team, what value you offer that another candidate wouldn’t.
Avoid ultimatums like “If you don’t give me this salary, I will walk away.” Instead, express genuine interest in joining while explaining that you need a specific improvement to the offer to accept. A simple template can help:
“Thank you so much for the offer. I’m genuinely thrilled and looking forward to joining the team. Before I accept the offer I’d like to discuss the base salary. I am an active member in the technical community and teach numerous courses online with X learning platforms. I know that my extensive knowledge of Y will greatly benefit the team. As such I’m looking for a base salary in the range of A to B. Please let me know if we can make this work and I’ll sign the offer right away!”
If You Don’t Get The Offer
Rejection is part of nearly every engineer’s career. Respond by taking time to reflect on your interviews and identify concrete areas to work on for the next cycle. Be patient; consistent preparation pays off.
