Consent Management Updates for Cloudflare Zaraz
Cloudflare Zaraz, the company's third-party tool manager, has added support for two important consent standards—IAB TCF and Google Consent Mode v2—alongside improved bot traffic handling. These updates give website operators more precise control over how consent and automated traffic are processed.
IAB TCF Compliance
The Cloudflare Zaraz CMP now meets the Interactive Advertising Bureau's Transparency and Consent Framework (IAB TCF) guidelines. This is particularly relevant for publishers using Google advertising products in the EEA, UK, and Switzerland, where Google requires an IAB Europe-approved CMP for AdSense and related services. Since March 2024, Zaraz users in these regions can run Google's advertising tools without restrictions.
Because IAB TCF requirements can complicate the consent modal, this compliance mode remains an opt-in feature. Instructions for enabling it are available in the official documentation.
Google Consent Mode v2 Signals
Google now expects websites to transmit consent signals alongside events sent to Google Analytics and Google Ads. Consent Mode v2 communicates details such as whether a visitor accepted cookies or agreed to personalized advertising. For each consent category, two values are required: a default status (typically denied before the user makes a choice) and an updated status reflecting the user's actual selection after they submit preferences.
Configuring Consent Mode v2 in Cloudflare Zaraz is straightforward, though the exact setup depends on which CMP you use. Integration examples, including with the Zaraz CMP, are documented on the developer documentation site.
Bot Management and Traffic Filtering
Cloudflare Zaraz also gained stronger bot management capabilities. Website crawlers must typically access pages, but their visits shouldn't necessarily fire analytics or conversion pixels. The Bot Score Threshold setting on the Zaraz settings page lets you control which requests reach Cloudflare Zaraz and which are skipped entirely.
Because Zaraz pricing is event-based, filtering out bot requests can also help manage costs. All of these features are included across every Zaraz plan, including the free tier. Users can enable them from the Cloudflare dashboard.
