Start With The Content, Not The Character
Fintech interfaces are data-dense by nature: spreadsheets, order forms, instrument cards, and live charts all compete for screen space. Unlike long-form reading, these products are used under pressure, often for hours at a stretch. Fatigue and distraction are real risks; a user who misreads a numeral or misses a label can make a costly error. Typography is one of the primary tools for mitigating that risk, because it determines how cleanly and quickly information can be parsed.
Before selecting a typeface, establish what the product actually displays. In trading platforms, for instance, the spreadsheet is the fundamental unit, carrying dozens of parameters per row. Around it sit supporting elements: cards with dynamic quotes, charts with price and volume histories, and market depth graphs showing buy and sell order volumes. All of these are text-first features, which makes the relationship between type, layout, and information accuracy a core design concern. Defining these data types and user flows first will make the typeface requirements much clearer.
Requirements Beyond Aesthetics: Language, Glyphs, and Context
Choosing a font family is not only a visual decision. For a fintech product, three practical constraints should be checked early: language support, symbol coverage, and the conditions in which the product will be used.
Language Support
Localization is a common scenario that is easily underestimated. If the product may be translated, evaluate the target languages from the start. Word lengths vary significantly between languages—German text is typically much longer than English, while French and Spanish sit somewhere in between. These differences can force layout changes regardless of how careful the original design was. Additionally, languages that use diacritics may need increased line spacing to remain legible.
Logographic systems (such as Chinese) are the opposite case: they are compact but rarely supported by the same font family as Latin scripts. A single typeface that covers both is uncommon, so the practical solution is to select two visually compatible families. Checking with the product owner or manager about planned localizations will allow you to account for these corner cases and build a scalable visual system.
Required Symbols
Financial interfaces demand a wide range of special glyphs: currency symbols, mathematical operators, and precise decimals. Not every typeface includes them, so verify coverage before committing. Foundry websites and type marketplaces typically provide specimens listing all supported glyphs and languages. If you already have a font installed, the glyph repertoire can be inspected locally—via the Font Book on macOS or the Character Map on Windows.
One notable gap exists in Figma. Unlike Adobe products, it does not provide a glyph panel, so you cannot browse a font’s full contents directly in the design tool. In that case, copy the required symbol from a local font viewer and paste it into the design. For a more organized approach, font management apps such as Typeface or FontBase allow you to catalogue fonts by characteristics, which is a separate and useful advantage.
Use Conditions
Consider the most common context of use. A long-form article is typically read in a calm environment, with time to process extended text. A professional fintech platform is the opposite: the user may be working across multiple devices, in distracting conditions, and with intense concentration over long shift-like sessions. These users do not read in a linear way; they scan rows of numbers, compare figures, and react quickly. The product must not add friction—this includes supporting quick interpretation of data and minimizing the risk of misreading an important value through poor type clarity or layout decisions. Selecting the typeface and refining the layout are therefore not just stylistic choices; they are functional decisions that have a direct effect on the reliability of the user’s work.
Typeface Anatomy And Classification
Before selecting fonts, it helps to understand the core characteristics that define them. Different classification systems exist, most notably the Vox-ATypI system from 1954, which grouped typefaces by visual traits and historical period. That system was formally de-adopted by ATypI in 2021 because it fails to account for contemporary type design, which often blends characteristics from multiple eras. For practical product design work, grouping typefaces by visual appearance rather than history is more useful. Four broad meta-groups — based on Vox but updated with modern additions — provide enough structure without overcomplicating the choice.
Proportional Vs. Monospaced
Typefaces fall into two categories based on character width. Proportional fonts give each letter a width determined by its natural shape and design tradition. Monospaced fonts assign every character the same width, which means wide letters like m or w must be compressed, while narrow ones such as i or l gain extra space or decorative serifs to fill the measure.
Proportional type is the default choice for standard reading. Monospaced fonts serve specific situations where vertical alignment matters: numeric tables, receipts, programming code, and similar contexts where each symbol must stack cleanly below the one above.
Key Measurements And Features
Several terms describe the parts of a typeface that affect its legibility:
- X-height — the height of a lowercase letter from baseline to mean line, measured by the letter
x. Capital height is the size of uppercase letters. Small caps sit between the two and suit specific emphasis needs. - Ascenders and descenders — strokes rising above the mean line (the stem of
h) or falling below the baseline (the tail ofy). - Counter — the enclosed white space inside letters like
oorq. - Serifs — the short terminal strokes that distinguish serif faces from sans-serifs.
- Aperture — how open or closed the shapes of letters like
corsare. A large aperture helps distinguish similar glyphs at small sizes, such ascfromo. - Contrast — the difference in stroke thickness between vertical and horizontal stems.

Display Vs. Text Roles
Typefaces are often grouped by their intended scale: display (headline) or text. Some faces work well in both roles, but each category has distinct strengths.
Display fonts suit headings, accents, and other large-size settings. They frequently feature tighter spacing and more intricate shapes that become visual noise or legibility problems at small sizes. High contrast and long ascenders and descenders are also common traits of display faces. Even at large sizes, a complicated display font may demand more recognition time from the user, so its use needs consideration.
Text fonts, by contrast, have simplified forms engineered for small sizes and sustained reading. A good body-text face shows little to no contrast — high contrast causes thin strokes to vibrate and impairs readability. Large apertures and open shapes keep similar letters distinguishable, and differentiated letterforms for i, l, and I help recognition in isolated contexts like codes or tickers. Most text faces enlarge the x-height and counters, minimize the gap between lowercase and capitals, and keep ascenders and descenders short to conserve vertical space in long passages.
When horizontal space is tight and the content is data-heavy, a compact-proportion font can save room. Avoid overly narrow faces, though; you may need to bump up the font size and increase letter spacing (positive tracking) to preserve legibility.
A readable body font often needs a companion for visual accents. Differentiating roles — say, serif headings with sans-serif body — can work, but a single font family is the more cohesive solution since every style and weight shares proportions. Font names often signal their intended use: terms like “Text,” “Display,” “Compact,” and “Caption” indicate where a face performs best. In practice, sans-serif fonts with low contrast are a dependable starting point for product UI: they lack ornamentation and small details, draw little attention to themselves, reduce visual noise, and let users parse information quickly.
