A new leadership chapter

CJ Desai has joined Cloudflare as President of Product and Engineering. Desai comes to the company from ServiceNow, where he helped scale the product business from $1.5 billion to over $10 billion in annualized revenue. His mandate at Cloudflare centers on advancing the company’s connectivity cloud—a cloud-native platform combining security, network connectivity, and developer tools.

From Mosaic to mass-scale platforms

Desai traces his interest in transformational technology to his graduate school days at the University of Illinois, where the Mosaic web browser first showed him the power of accessible innovation. Before Mosaic, the web was largely confined to a niche academic audience. The browser's simple ability to display images beside text changed that, opening the internet to a mass user base.

That experience shaped a career focused on technologies that achieve broad adoption, spanning software-as-a-service, cloud computing, and AI. For Desai, the lesson is straightforward: innovation is the engine of every technology company, and the most fulfilling work is building products that scale.

Why Cloudflare sits at the center of the next wave

Desai sees a convergence of forces shaping the current technology landscape:

  • AI is evolving rapidly and remains largely uncharted territory
  • Enterprises face mounting pressure to reduce technical debt and retire legacy applications
  • Multi-cloud deployments are becoming standard for global performance and scale
  • High-performance connectivity is now a baseline expectation

Cloudflare's position at the intersection of these trends makes it a natural platform for disruption, both for itself and for customers transforming their own businesses.

A platform play for organic growth

Desai’s growth philosophy centers on extensibility. Platforms that scale well start by solving their customers’ most acute pain points and then grow into adjacent products that address the next layer of challenges. Combined with a focus on customer value and a clear read on the evolving technology landscape, this approach becomes a compounding growth strategy.

At Cloudflare, the connectivity cloud gives the company a foundation to build on across industries. Desai’s priorities include refining product offerings so they remain purpose-built and scalable as the customer base grows—helping organizations strengthen their global online presence without compromising security or performance.

Customer-first engineering

In meeting the Cloudflare team, including co-founders Matthew Prince and Michelle Zatlyn, Desai noted a shared sense of pride in solving hard internet infrastructure problems with a customer-first mindset. He plans to work closely with product and engineering teams, as well as partners and customers, to push the company’s platform and organic growth potential forward.
