GitHub Universe 2023: A Conference Built Around Developer Productivity
GitHub Universe returns to San Francisco on November 8-9 with a program that centers on three pillars: generative AI, developer-first security, and developer experience (DevEx). The conference is designed to help development teams accelerate their workflows and maximize output, with a heavy emphasis on AI coding tools.
The event takes place at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts (YBCA) and will feature more than 100 industry speakers across five concurrently running stages. Attendees can choose from the Main Stage, SF MoMA theater, Screening Room, and the Demos & Donuts stage for general sessions, panel discussions, and technical presentations.
Hands-on Learning and Certification Opportunities
For the first time, in-person attendees will have access to exclusive beta certification testing on-site. Exams will be offered for GitHub Foundations, GitHub Actions, GitHub Advanced Security, and GitHub Administration. Additionally, the event will host nine hands-on workshops running from November 7-9, each providing a complimentary voucher for a certification exam. Standalone vouchers are also available for purchase.
The event also expands its networking and learning infrastructure. A Discussions Lounge will host peer-to-peer conversations, while the new Ask GitHub booth lets developers get product questions answered on the spot without advance registration. The Hub area will showcase partner technologies and interactive demonstrations throughout the venue.
Security in the AI Era
A major thread running through the conference program is the intersection of AI assistance and code security. As developers leverage generative AI tools to move faster, natively embedded security testing needs to keep pace. Sessions will address how security practices must evolve alongside AI-augmented workflows to ensure speed does not come at the cost of code safety.
According to recent survey data cited by GitHub, 92% of U.S.-based developers are already using AI coding tools both professionally and personally. GitHub Universe aims to serve both those developers who are new to AI-assisted development and those looking to deepen their understanding of these systems.
Virtual and On-Site Options
Virtual attendance is free and offers live access to Main Stage sessions alongside on-demand recordings from the SF MoMA theater and Screening Room once they become available following the live keynotes and broadcasts.
In-person tickets carry a 30% discount during the Super-Early Bird window, while supplies last. A pre-written email template is available for developers needing to persuade their managers to approve attendance.
