A Public Dataset for Measuring Software Development's Economic Footprint

GitHub has launched the GitHub Innovation Graph, an open data platform designed to track software development activity across global economies. The initiative responds to a persistent gap: policymakers and researchers have long relied on metrics like patents and research papers to gauge innovation, while reliable, standardized data on software development trends has been scarce.

The platform provides quarterly longitudinal data beginning in 2020, covering Git pushes, developers, organizations, repositories, programming languages, licenses, topics, and cross-economy collaboration. The dataset is available under the public-domain CC0-1.0 license, with accompanying documentation explaining the methodology and interactive visualizations for exploring the numbers.

Who Benefits From the Data

The primary audience includes academic researchers, policymakers, and developers. Research commissioned by GitHub from the consultancy Tattle found that scholars in international development, public policy, and economics wanted to work with GitHub data but were blocked by technical hurdles around extraction and normalization. The Innovation Graph eliminates much of that upfront work, offering aggregated data that previously might have required paid third-party providers—or might not have existed in usable form at all.

For policymakers focused on digital transformation and job creation, the dataset adds evidence to a growing body of work linking open source contributions to startup formation, innovation indexes, and significant GDP contributions in the EU. GitHub hopes that easier access to robust data will support research that leads to policies fostering developer ecosystems.

Individual developers can use the tool to see how their work fits into broader patterns, such as how different economies collaborate on projects or how interest in a particular language or topic shifts over time.
