Framework by Figma: A Global Design Systems Event

Figma is hosting Framework, a global virtual event for the design systems community, on April 16. The half-day event will feature new feature announcements, best-practice sessions, and a look at the roadmap for design systems tooling. The agenda includes:

  • Deep dives into new capabilities for design systems work
  • Case studies from organizations like Verizon on their design systems journeys
  • Product team talks on upcoming direction
  • A design-to-code roundtable with Bumble, GitHub, and Hewlett Packard
  • An expert Q&A session for community questions

Last year’s Framework event introduced Code Connect for developers, typography and gradient variables, and the Library Analytics API for tracking adoption across an organization.

Design systems have moved from simple style guides to a foundational part of product development, but managing them effectively remains a challenge. Figma’s approach, as described by VP of Product Sho Kuwamoto, is to balance structure with flexibility: “We believe it’s our job to help you make changes to designs quickly, whether you have structured your designs ahead of time or not.” The company aims to build features that support both organized and more fluid design workflows.

Bringing Design and Engineering Together

A central goal of Framework is to connect designers and engineers working on design systems. Sessions will cover topics ranging from design principles to technical implementation, including a new feature intended to strengthen the link between design and development—highlighting the importance of cross-functional collaboration in successful design systems.

A Global Community Event

While the main event is virtual, Framework also includes regional programming. A virtual session for the Asia-Pacific community is scheduled for April 18, and an in-person and virtual event will take place in Tokyo on April 23. Additional in-person meetups are planned in London and other cities. The main virtual stream will carry all key announcements and sessions for remote attendees.
