Hacktoberfest 2022 expands beyond code

DigitalOcean's annual open source celebration, Hacktoberfest, returns for its ninth year this October. With over 2.6 billion contributions made on GitHub in the past year alone, the event is a chance to give back to the projects that power much of the modern digital infrastructure.

Non-code contributions matter

While code pulls are the most visible form of open source participation, many projects are equally in need of non-technical help. Documentation writing, logo design, advocacy, and even financial support are all viable ways to contribute this year. You don't need to be a developer to make a meaningful impact on a project you care about.

GitHub's role this year

GitHub is taking part on two fronts. First, contributors can work directly on several GitHub projects, including GitHub Docs—an opportunity for anyone interested in improving the platform's open source documentation.

Second, the GitHub Social Impact team is collaborating with DigitalOcean to connect volunteers with participating digital public goods (DPGs). These are projects aimed at fostering a more equitable world, and they offer a way to focus contributions on social impact initiatives.

Getting started

More than 90,000 projects across GitHub are already tagged for Hacktoberfest this year.
