Help Finish a Bay Area Transit Map Built in Memory of Courtney Garg Brousseau

During last year’s Maker Week, the Figma team learned about Courtney Garg Brousseau, a transit advocate who had passed away while working on a passion project: a digital transit map of the San Francisco Bay Area, inspired by New York City’s subway maps. Courtney had built the map in Figma, and after coordinating with his family, a group of Figmates decided to remix and continue the work. Since the original file wasn’t accessible, the team rebuilt the map from scratch using only a few reference images.

Now, with permission from Courtney’s family, Figma is publishing the map as a Community file. It’s not finished; because the reconstruction was based on limited images, some pieces are still missing. The Figma Community is built around sharing and iterating on each other’s work, and the team is inviting others to do just that with Courtney’s map.

Anyone interested in public transit, maps, or design can open the Community file and add what’s missing. To contribute:

  1. Open the transit map in the Figma Community.
  2. Click the Duplicate button. Figma will add a copy of the file to your drafts; files duplicated from the Community carry a (Community) suffix in the file name.
  3. Add to the map and build on Courtney’s work.
  4. Publish your version back to the Figma Community.
