From prompt to canvas: Make ideas become editable layers
Figma is addressing one of the most-requested capabilities for Make: moving generated designs into the main canvas for further editing. The new Copy design feature lets users take any preview from Figma Make and bring it into Figma Design as structured, editable layers—no exports, no mode switching.
The intent is for Make output to feel native and contextual. Once a design is copied to the canvas, teams can treat it as a starting point for iteration, collaboration, or production work, rather than a static image. This closes the loop between generating an idea and acting on it.
Structured layers, not screenshots
Copy design positions prompted ideas as building blocks, not just rendered previews. Because the content arrives as real layers in the Figma Design canvas, it supports a workflow where anyone can modify, remix, or extend the design without recreating it from scratch.
A typical scenario: a product manager refines a mockup in Make via natural language, then copies that preview into Design. The team can then build on those structured layers directly, turning a generated concept into a shared design asset that's both flexible and actionable.
Building on community-driven workflows
Figma notes it has observed community members bridging this exact gap already—most notably through the html.to.design plugin from <div>RIOTS, which imports live web content as editable Figma frames. To support this direction, Figma has acquired the technology behind that plugin.
The partnership does not alter <div>RIOTS' existing offerings. The team will continue to build and maintain html.to.design and its other tools independently. According to <div>RIOTS, new features for html.to.design are planned in the coming months, and its technology will feed into future Make functionality.
A pipeline from idea to production
Figma's broader view is that the canvas should accommodate any asset, from any starting point, so that ideas can be explored and evolved by the whole team. Copy design marks an early step in that direction, helping turn a prompt into a tangible, editable object that carries through to the final product.
