Smashing Magazine Wants a Sponsorship Coordinator to Join Its Remote Team
Smashing Magazine is hiring a remote team member to handle advertising and sponsorship sales across its publications, conferences, and events. The role involves managing relationships with both new and existing sponsors, and the team is open to hiring a full-time employee, a freelancer, or even outsourcing the work to another agency.
The company describes itself as a small, remote-first team of 12 people. The position will touch every part of the business: display ads and sponsored articles on Smashing Magazine, online and in-person conferences, the bi-weekly Smashing Podcast, and the weekly Smashing Online Workshops. Whoever fills the role will be expected to bring in sponsors that genuinely serve Smashing's audience of web designers and developers, and to nurture long-term partnerships rather than chase one-off deals.
What the Job Involves
- Finding and reaching out to new advertising and sponsorship contacts, while also maintaining the relationships Smashing has already built.
- Managing sponsors once they're onboard, making sure expectations and deadlines are clear on both sides.
- Developing creative sponsorship packages that give sponsors visibility without compromising Smashing's editorial principles.
- Coordinating with the internal teams to confirm that sponsorship commitments are realistic given the available time and resources.
- Thinking creatively about how to maximize sponsorship value across Smashing's different platforms.
Who They're Looking For
The ideal candidate will have a solid understanding of the web community and what kinds of companies would be a good fit for Smashing's audience. Existing connections with web companies are a plus. Other requirements include:
- Excellent written English for clear communication with global sponsors.
- Flexibility to schedule calls with sponsors in timezones stretching to the US West Coast.
- Comfort working asynchronously, mainly via Slack and Notion.
- Enough familiarity with web technologies to judge whether a prospective sponsor is relevant to readers.
- A preference for remote, full-time work, though freelancers and agencies are also welcome to apply.
Why Join Smashing
Smashing is a deliberately small operation, and the new hire will have room to shape the role itself. The team emphasizes no micro-management and few meetings, aiming to let people focus on the work. The company is fully distributed, with most staff in Europe and others in the US and Hong Kong, an arrangement that predates pandemic-era remote work policies. Smashing's community is central to how the company operates, and it says it's always looking for new ways to reach that audience — a need that became especially pressing as the pandemic pushed its conferences online.
Interested candidates should email [email protected] with a description of their background, experience, and reasons for wanting to join the team.
