Cloudflare names Alex Kim as first Korea country manager

Cloudflare has opened its Korea entity, Cloudflare Korea LLC in Seoul, with Alex Kim joining as the company’s first Country Manager for South Korea as of November 1. Kim is the first official employee of the new entity, marking Cloudflare’s expansion beyond the Seoul data center that has operated for more than a decade.

Bringing a broad enterprise background

Kim brings roughly 18 years of experience across pre-sales, support, consulting, and field sales roles, beginning his career as a Java programmer. His resume includes both small, agile organizations and large enterprises such as SAP, Dell, Autodesk, and Akamai. Through those varied roles, Kim says he’s learned that while new technology matters, the environment in which people collaborate is what ultimately drives results.

Kim was born and educated in Korea through middle school before moving to Toronto to study filmmaking. Although he didn’t pursue a career as a movie director, he draws a parallel between that ambition and his current work orchestrating teams and producing outcomes. Away from the office, Kim plays piano and composes music as a stress reliever, and has previously created a rock song for a former employer.

Why Cloudflare is expanding in Korea now

Korea ranks among the world’s leaders in smartphone penetration, internet usage, and connection speeds. Yet cloud adoption has lagged behind those metrics, largely due to government regulations on public enterprises and the finance industry. Recent regulatory easing is expected to accelerate cloud transformation, which in turn raises the importance of security in cloud environments.

For the many Korean startups and chaebol expanding globally in sectors like metaverse, Cloudflare is positioned as what Kim calls a “safe highway” for internet infrastructure. He sees opportunity both in serving Korean companies that need fast, secure connections abroad and in building relationships domestically that Cloudflare hasn’t needed in its previous data-center-only presence.

Priorities for the Korea market

Kim plans to evangelize Cloudflare in the Korean market, spreading the value of the platform to organizations across industries and promoting the company’s broader Supercloud vision. Over the next few years, he intends to establish Cloudflare as a trusted cloud security provider in Korea while contributing to business growth and local job creation.

Kim points to several Cloudflare offerings he believes will resonate in the current economic climate, particularly amid a global slowdown:

  • R2 storage for addressing enterprise concerns over egress costs
  • Zero Trust products, an area Cloudflare is heavily investing in as an alternative to the traditional VPN market
  • The Supercloud concept, which Kim believes is only achievable by Cloudflare

As the first Country Manager for Cloudflare Korea, Kim says he’s excited to work for a company with significant growth potential, especially as customers seek more cost-effective and valuable solutions during tighter economic conditions.
