GitHub Copilot Free arrives for all developers
GitHub has crossed 150 million registered developers and is marking the milestone by making GitHub Copilot available at no cost. GitHub Copilot Free is now automatically integrated into VS Code, requiring only sign-in with a personal GitHub account—new accounts work as well.
The free tier includes 2,000 code completions and 50 chat messages per month. Users can choose between Anthropic’s Claude 3.5 Sonnet or OpenAI’s GPT-4o model for Copilot interactions.
What the free tier covers
Copilot Free grants access to the full range of Copilot Chat capabilities:
- Asking coding questions and explaining existing code
- Identifying and diagnosing bugs
- Executing multi-file edits through Copilot Edits
- Using third-party Copilot agents from the GitHub Marketplace
- Building and running custom Copilot extensions
Copilot Chat is also now available directly from the GitHub dashboard in public preview, and it works with the free tier—no additional setup required.
Pricing and legacy access unchanged
Students, educators, and maintainers of open source projects retain their existing free access to unlimited Copilot Pro accounts. This new free tier is additive: it makes Copilot available to every developer on GitHub, including those who were not previously covered by Pro benefits.
