Design Systems in the AI Era: From Component Libraries to Carriers of Craft

AI is rapidly changing how products are built, and design systems are evolving in response. No longer just static libraries of reusable parts, they are becoming dynamic frameworks that encode a team’s taste and standards so that AI can apply them consistently. We spoke with product leaders and practitioners about the key shifts defining this new role.

Speed Needs Direction

The pressure to ship quickly can erode the craft that differentiates products. As Figma Product Manager Tara Nadella noted at Schema 2025, "Speed without direction leads to divergence." Design systems provide that direction by capturing a team’s decisions and context. When combined with AI, they can enforce quality and consistency while accelerating the execution process, helping teams scale their output without losing their distinct identity.

From Guides to Vessels of Creative Identity

AI can produce work quickly, but without a strong foundation, outputs can drift from a team's vision. According to product designer Wayne Sun at Figma, design systems are key to preventing this. "Design systems open the door for product experiences that scale without losing their soul," he says. "Intuition becomes substance. Taste becomes repeatable." They are becoming active carriers of craft, encoding a team's sensibility so AI can apply it at every stage, ensuring that components and layouts carry the same nuance a designer would bring.

Grounded Exploration with AI

Exploring multiple design directions has traditionally been a manual, time-consuming process. New AI capabilities, such as the prompt-to-app tool Figma Make, are changing this. When paired with a robust design system, AI-generated explorations remain grounded and usable. Teams can generate dozens of variations—experimenting with layouts and components—all built from the same proven foundation. As Figma developer advocate Jake Albaugh explains, this means choosing a direction has a shorter path to production. "It becomes an exercise in refinement," he says.

Authoring for AI Consumption

Design systems have historically been built for humans who could infer context from their understanding of the brand. AI cannot make those inferences. "Anything you might expect designers to infer without having it explicitly written in the system is really critical context for AI," says Zoe Adelman, product manager at Figma. This is shifting how systems are authored, moving beyond tokens and components to capturing the reasoning behind decisions. Teams are documenting examples of quality and making implicit knowledge explicit, giving AI the parameters it needs to align with brand standards.

Governance as a Core Function

As AI tools enter workflows, design systems teams are expanding their role from library maintenance to active governance. They are now responsible for the tools that builders across the company use to contribute to products. By embedding design rules directly into these tools, teams can influence outputs at the point of creation. Grant Blakeman, staff design engineer at LinkedIn, notes this allows them to "guide teams, and now also their tools, through each step of the product process proactively." This proactive approach blurs traditional role boundaries, with design systems teams enabling a wider range of contributors and tools.

AI as a Collaborator in Maintenance

The future of design systems may see AI acting as an active collaborator in their upkeep, rather than just a supporting tool. "I can imagine a world where design systems evolve automatically alongside our products," says Matt Fichtner, design manager at Figma. This could involve AI that understands the system and its intent, proactively identifying where updates are needed and offering to make changes. In such a world, design systems would function less like fixed component sets and more like adaptive ecosystems. As Fichtner envisions, "AI collaborators will function like members of the design systems team," allowing designers to focus on defining new patterns and solving new challenges instead of configuring existing ones.

For teams prepared to treat their design systems as strategic infrastructure, the shift promises a way to move faster and scale craft without compromising the details that make their products distinctive.
