When Customer Success Means More Than Support
For enterprise organizations, the value of a security platform extends beyond the technology itself. It’s also about having a trusted partner who understands your specific infrastructure and can guide you through both routine operations and unexpected crises. That’s the philosophy behind Cloudflare’s Customer Success Manager (CSM) program, which pairs enterprise customers with dedicated experts for ongoing strategic and technical support.
Building a Partnership, Not Just a Contract
According to Jake Jones, a Customer Success Manager at Cloudflare covering the Middle East and Africa, the core of the role is becoming a trusted advisor. This means taking a genuine interest in customer priorities and helping them achieve their goals. Every customer has a unique IT setup — spanning legacy, cloud, and hybrid infrastructures — and successful partnerships are built on understanding those specifics.
The engagement model is hands-on. CSMs conduct interactive workshops, account reviews, tuning sessions, and regular product updates. They work with customers to map out future initiatives, projects, and mitigation strategies, ensuring the right Cloudflare solutions are applied in the right order.
A Real-World Test: Mitigating an Attack
Consider the case of one customer, referred to as "Dynamic," which came to Cloudflare in late 2019 with a strong emphasis on vendor collaboration. The relationship developed quickly, with regular meetings to prioritize solutions and understand how the company operated. By the spring of 2020, those preparations were put to the test when a series of diverse attacks aimed to overload Dynamic’s website and IP subnets.
Because the two teams had already established clear communication workflows and proactive protocols, the response was swift. Cloudflare’s automatic DDoS protection mitigated the attack, while Magic Transit ensured Dynamic’s on-premise infrastructure remained safeguarded. As a result, the customer’s reputation was preserved and financial losses were minimized.
Beyond Defense: Early Access and Product Input
The partnership isn’t solely about defense. As part of the Premium Success offering, customers get access to Cloudflare’s beta (early release) launches. This is an opportunity for knowledge sharing and for customers to provide direct feedback on new functionalities they’d like to see.
That feedback is funneled back to Cloudflare’s product and design teams, which continuously develop new features and updates based on customer input. In some cases, CSMs can connect enterprise customers with Product Managers for deeper conversations about how solutions can apply to specific business goals. Meanwhile, Cloudflare is constantly expanding its own infrastructure and server capacity to accommodate a growing market and evolving threat landscape.
The company uses machine learning and behavioral analysis to ship new security products at a rapid pace, ensuring customers remain protected without sacrificing performance.
A Collaborative Outcome
The takeaway, according to Jones, is that forming genuine relationships leads to secure platform consolidation and trust in those who manage it. It’s a team effort between the customer, the CSM, and the wider product organization. For existing enterprise customers, the next step is to reach out to their dedicated CSM. Others interested in learning more can subscribe for updates, and a team member will follow up to discuss available paths.
