Thirteen Years of Birthday Week

Cloudflare turns 13 this year, and once again the company is marking the occasion with a week of product announcements. The tradition goes back to the launch year, when Cloudflare used its first birthday to introduce an automatic IPv6 gateway. That decision looks prescient: Cloudflare Radar now reports that 37% of connections to Cloudflare use IPv6. This year, the company is extending a special offer aimed at pushing IPv6 adoption even further.

The framing for the anniversary is familiar: build the future rather than predict it. Over the years, Birthday Week has produced announcements that changed the trajectory of the web. Universal SSL, introduced in 2014, doubled the size of the encrypted web overnight — Cloudflare Radar now shows that 99% of HTTP requests worldwide are encrypted. Cloudflare Workers redefined how applications are built and scaled, and unmetered DDoS protection tackled a persistent scourge of the Internet.

Privacy and Cryptography on the Agenda

This year's program includes several privacy-focused items. Last year saw the launch of Turnstile, Cloudflare's privacy-preserving CAPTCHA alternative. The company says it will now close a major privacy hole in the encrypted Internet and demonstrate how cryptography can make measurements anonymous and private. Expect also more encrypted and anonymous connections between users and the Internet, updates on Turnstile, and a push to make web fonts faster and more private.

AI Claims a Quarter of the Week

Artificial intelligence will be a running theme: one quarter of all blog posts during the week will cover AI, machine learning, GPUs, and the tools for building, managing, and measuring AI-powered applications. The message from Cloudflare is clear — AI is headed everywhere, on device, in the cloud, and throughout Cloudflare's edge network.

Not everything is a birthday announcement. Cloudflare WARP, for example, came out of an April 1 release cycle, as did 1.1.1.1. But this week does include a new product aimed at database users. Called Hyperdrive, it promises a jump to lightspeed for anyone working with data stores.

Speed, Reliability, and Climate

Performance remains a core part of the mission. The company will follow up on network performance metrics, explain how it keeps the network running amid shifting Internet conditions, and cover low-latency streaming and smarter caching strategies.

The final theme is climate. Cloudflare will discuss its environmental impact and commitments, framing climate action as another collaborative effort between the company and the broader Internet community.

As with every Birthday Week, the full set of announcements will unfold over the coming days — with more to come beyond what's been teased.
