Cloudflare Gateway Now Powers Threat Blocking on Mobile Through 1.1.1.1
Cloudflare Gateway has been protecting users on local networks from malicious domains, phishing, command and control servers, and spam. Now that capability is extending to mobile devices through the 1.1.1.1 w/ WARP app. The integration is rolling out this week to both iOS and Android clients, meaning the same DNS-level filtering that keeps office WiFi safe can follow your phone across any network.
The 1.1.1.1 w/ WARP app already encrypts traffic leaving your device for a more private browsing experience. Enabling Gateway inside the app adds an extra filtering layer that checks each DNS query against Cloudflare’s threat intelligence before resolving it. Since the policy is tied to your Gateway location rather than a physical network, protection travels with you.
No separate app download is required—updating the existing 1.1.1.1 w/ WARP client gives you access to the setup flow below.
Before You Configure: Prerequisites
- Install the latest 1.1.1.1 w/ WARP version from either the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.
- Sign up for Cloudflare Gateway through the Cloudflare for Teams dashboard. The free tier is available with just a Cloudflare account.
Locate Your Gateway Unique ID
Within the Cloudflare Gateway dashboard, open the Locations section:
Expand the location you want to associate with your phone:
From the DNS over HTTPS endpoint, copy the 10-character subdomain. This value is case-sensitive, so either note it down or keep the browser window open—you will need it during the mobile setup.
Entering the Gateway ID on Your Phone
Open the 1.1.1.1 w/ WARP app and tap the menu icon in the top-right corner:
Select Advanced, located under the Account button:
Tapping Connection options — positioned just above Diagnostics — brings up the DNS configuration screen:
Choose DNS Settings:
Finally, enter the copied subdomain into the GATEWAY UNIQUE ID field:
If 1.1.1.1 DNS, WARP, or WARP+ was already active in the app, Gateway filtering begins immediately after the ID is saved. Android admins can follow the platform-specific setup guide, and those deploying to corporate devices via MDM should check the iOS MDM instructions.
Once configured, your phone enforces all security policies attached to that Gateway location, and analytics for the traffic will report on your dashboard.
Going Beyond Mobile
The 1.1.1.1 w/ WARP beta for Windows and macOS is also under way. Those hoping to apply Gateway filtering on desktop platforms can sign up for the beta. The team continues to refine Gateway, and the Cloudflare for Teams dashboard remains the starting point for securing devices, data centers, or offices.
