Safari’s Fluid Type Bug Still Haunts calc() — But Only in Certain Browsers
That viewport-based fluid typography quirk Chris Coyier flagged back in 2012—where text refuses to resize as the window shrinks—isn’t just ancient history. While it once plagued Chrome 20 and Safari 6, Sara Soueidan points out the issue lingers in Safari today whenever a calc() expression mixes in viewport units.
A Weird Workaround That Actually Works
Sara highlights an obscure trick credited to Martin Auswöger: tossing in -webkit-marquee-increment: 0vw; forces Safari to behave, per the old Apple docs. It’s bizarre, but it gets the job done—and there’s a live demo to prove it.
Before you bolt this into production, note Sara’s own follow-up: she tested Safari Technology Preview (currently Safari 15) and the bug already appears fixed there. So the workaround is mostly a stopgap for older builds, not a permanent fixture.
