WordPress.com Launches Free Student Plan With Year-Long Hosting
WordPress.com has introduced a Student plan that provides students with free hosting for a full year, removing cost as an obstacle to learning web skills. The offering is designed for students of any subject to create and share their work online while establishing ownership of their online presence from the outset.
The move addresses a significant gap for educators teaching beginning web development. Building a WordPress site often serves as a capstone project that demonstrates HTML, CSS, design, and hosting skills gained over a semester, yet hosting those projects has consistently presented a hurdle. Previous approaches have included shared hosting plans that carry financial costs, sandbox services that have since disappeared, and WordPress Playground, which complicates saving and sharing work. Sponsored hosting has also proven difficult to secure on a semester-by-semester basis.
This student plan from the platform’s developer offers a direct solution with a year-long eligibility window. While some may perceive WordPress.com as more point-and-click than self-hosted WordPress.org, the hosted service now provides the same developer affordances for directly modifying code. One limitation to note is that the plan only covers .blog and .art domains, though this is unlikely to hinder educational projects and sites can be migrated later if additional investment is desired.
