SVG Beyond the Screen

Eric Meyer has been putting SVG to an unusual use: hand-coding schematics for his woodworking projects. As he explains, these aren’t elaborate renderings—they’re practical diagrams that help him plan material purchases and cuts. The side benefit, he notes, is that the exercise has deepened his understanding of SVG itself.

From Code to Print

Meyer’s post brought to mind a similar real-world encounter with SVG from my own past. When I had access to a letterpress shop, I decided to turn some SVG files into printable plates for small art pieces.

The process started with some simple SVG shape morphing to generate intermediate frames. From there, I imported those frames into Illustrator, assembled a design, and sent it off to a company that produces letterpress plates from polymer.

With the finished plate in hand, I could pull prints of the design.

The results were surprisingly good—a satisfying crossover between digital code and physical craftsmanship.
