Vercel lands in Gartner's first Cloud Application Platforms Magic Quadrant

Vercel has been named a Visionary in the 2024 Gartner Magic Quadrant for Cloud Application Platforms — the first edition of this particular quadrant. The company positions this recognition around its Frontend Cloud ecosystem, which is built to handle delivery infrastructure so development teams can concentrate on product work rather than platform configuration.

Gartner® Magic Quadrant™ for Cloud Application Platforms

Gartner evaluated 12 vendors in the space on execution ability and completeness of vision. "By abstracting the complexities associated with infrastructure management, cloud application platforms enable product teams to deliver faster customer value," the firm said in its report. "Visionaries have a clear vision of the future and are making significant investments in the development of unique technologies."

What's driving the platform

Vercel points to several technology investments as evidence of its forward-looking position, spanning framework support, AI tooling, and security:

  • Framework-defined infrastructure — an approach where infrastructure adapts to the developer's code rather than forcing code into a preconfigured environment.
  • AI SDK — tooling for building AI-powered applications with minimal code.
  • Vercel Marketplace — a hub connecting first-party services directly to Vercel projects.
  • v0 — an AI coding assistant for engineers, with a generative chat interface that lets non-technical team members build without writing code.
  • Vercel Web Application Firewall (WAF) — blocking billions of malicious requests to keep applications secure by default.
  • Next.js — the React framework that underpins many large-scale production web applications.

"A lot of the value we get from Vercel is things we don't have to think about. Initial load performance is just as important as interaction performance, but we spend so much less time thinking about load performance because of the optimizations Vercel offers us."

Charlton Roberts Senior Manager of Product Engineering at Frame.io

Adoption across the spectrum

The company notes that its user base now spans startups and enterprise organizations alike. The value proposition is consistent: teams handle the core product while Vercel manages deployment, scaling, and performance optimization. The broader ecosystem includes millions of developers using Next.js and the AI SDK, alongside thousands of contributors to the open-source and partner ecosystem.
