Frontend Workshops On Tap For Summer And Fall

Frontend and design work keeps getting more sophisticated. To help practitioners keep pace, Smashing Magazine is running a series of live online workshops from July through October 2021. The sessions are split into 2.5-hour blocks across multiple days, with instructors from the community covering topics that range from modern CSS to HTML email and design systems.

The workshops are designed to be interactive rather than lecture-style. Attendees can ask questions, share their screens for feedback, and work through practical examples. Group exercises, homework, and live discussions are part of the format, and video recordings of every session are included so participants can review material they missed.

July–August Schedule

The first batch of workshops runs through the summer:

  • Creating & Maintaining Successful Design Systems (Dev) with Brad Frost, June 29 – July 13.
  • Level-Up With Modern CSS (Dev) with Stephanie Eckles, July 8–22.
  • Designing Websites That Convert (UX) with Paul Boag, July 22–30.
  • The TypeScript Masterclass (Dev) with Stefan Baumgartner, August 5–19.
  • Designing The Perfect Navigation (UX) with Vitaly Friedman, August 26–27.

How The Sessions Work

The format is deliberately paced to avoid the usual video-conference fatigue. Because sessions are capped at 2.5 hours each, there is room for Q&A and follow-up discussion within every sitting. The workshops span several weeks so that attendees have time to absorb material between sessions, work on assignments, and bring questions back to the next live meeting.

The focus is on practical, applicable techniques rather than broad overview talks. Instructors walk through real examples, and participants are encouraged to join in with their own code or design challenges. In addition to recordings, attendees receive slides and other workshop materials.
