Background Images Give CSS Borders More Range
A standard CSS border can be dashed or dotted, but the dash length, the size of the gaps, slants, fading and animation are largely out of reach. Those effects are still possible with a workaround.
Amit Sheen built a Dashed Border Generator that demonstrates it.
The technique relies on four multiple backgrounds. Since the background property accepts comma-separated values, four backgrounds — one per side: top, right, bottom and left — can be sized so they read as a border, which is what opens up the extra control.
