Front-end 2021: The year of the full-stack developer
The most significant front-end shifts this year may not feel like front-end at all, says Jay Freestone. The trend toward full-stack responsibilities, flagged back in 2019, has proven accurate—and even the evolution of frameworks reflects it, with growing emphasis on data-fetching, concurrency, security, and scalability.
Freestone’s wishlist for the web platform in 2021: among other things, he hopes to see HTML’s inert attribute ship unflagged across all three browser engines. Also on his radar: React framework maturity, early container queries, and WASM adoption.
