A New Governance Model for React
More than a decade after Meta open-sourced React, the project is getting a new institutional home. React, React Native, JSX, and related ecosystem projects are moving to the React Foundation, which will operate under the Linux Foundation. The foundation's mandate covers maintaining React's infrastructure, organizing React Conf, and running initiatives that support the ecosystem.
The move formalizes a relationship that has grown organically since React's release. The project now powers over 50 million websites and counts Microsoft, Shopify, Bloomberg, Discord, Coinbase, and the NFL among its adopters. Through React Native, the framework has expanded beyond the web to mobile, desktop, TVs, gaming consoles, and mixed reality devices.
Separating Business and Technical Oversight
The React Foundation's governing board will draw representatives from Amazon, Callstack, Expo, Meta, Microsoft, Software Mansion, and Vercel, with plans to widen participation over time. A key design principle is the division between the foundation's business governance and the technical direction of the projects themselves.
Releases, features, and technical strategy will be governed by a separate structure led by React's maintainers and contributors. This technical governance body will operate independently of the React Foundation. The React team says it is actively developing this structure and will publish details on the React blog in a future post.
Meta's Ongoing Commitment
Meta is backing the transition with a five-year partnership that includes over $3 million in funding and dedicated engineering support. The company says this investment is intended to ensure a smooth shift to independent governance without disrupting the stability and innovation the community expects.
Meta will continue to use React as its primary UI framework for the web and across its apps, and will maintain a full-time engineering team working on React and React Native. The foundation model, the company argues, opens up new avenues for collaboration and growth across the ecosystem while keeping the technical work anchored in the maintainer community.
