Why Browsers Are the Weakest Link
Every internet-connected organization depends on web browsers for core operations—processing transactions, engaging customers, and handling sensitive data. But every click on a link triggers the local download and execution of a substantial bundle of unknown code on the user's device. IT teams are perpetually playing defense, waiting for the next zero-day browser vulnerability to surface. The question is not whether one will appear, but when.
A viable answer is to stop executing untrusted code on user devices entirely. Instead, shift that burden to a remote, isolated browser environment. Cloudflare Browser Isolation, now available as an add-on to the Cloudflare for Teams zero trust suite, aims to bring this capability to organizations of any size—from startups to large enterprises—without forcing users to switch browsers or requiring complex network topologies.
Reliability: The Historic Barrier to Adoption
Remote Browser Isolation (RBI) is not a new concept. Secure remote execution has existed for years, yet adoption has lagged because of flawed execution. Browsers are central to virtually all work; any degradation in user experience or performance leads to productivity loss—or outright rejection of the security tool.
Legacy isolation solutions have suffered from unreliable rendering and poor performance. This led IT organizations to restrict the higher security posture to specific high-risk users or activities. But assuming some users or websites are inherently safe leaves an open door, much like the outdated castle-and-moat network model.
Cloudflare's approach is built on Chromium, the same engine powering Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, and Brave. This, paired with its proprietary Network Vector Rendering technique, ensures pages render consistently and accurately even as web technologies advance and grow more complex.
Speed: Where Legacy Solutions Failed
Older RBI technologies were hamstrung by two things: their fundamental design and the networks they operated on. Many relied on pixel pushing, which is bandwidth-intensive and laggy, or on fragile content-disarm and reconstruction that can break pages or miss malicious payloads entirely.
Network Vector Rendering sidesteps these issues by streaming lightweight draw commands instead of image data, delivering a safe view without heavy bandwidth demands or quality loss. Performance is further supported by positioning remote browsers across a global network, close to users worldwide. Since the remote browser is attached to the internet backbone, it can fetch website content at consistent speeds. For the roughly 30 million Americans lacking broadband access (according to the FCC), this means slow last-mile connections no longer bottleneck page loads. Users on low-bandwidth connections can experience web pages that load at the speed of the remote infrastructure, not their local link—a meaningful step toward closing the digital divide.
Simplicity: Integration Over Complexity
The typical RBI product is deployed either as a separate network appliance—like a virtual machine or firewall box—or by forcing users to adopt a different browser. Appliance-based setups often require IT to stitch together separate solutions from the same or different vendors, leading to tangled networks and inconsistent policy interfaces.
Since Cloudflare Browser Isolation is natively integrated into Cloudflare for Teams, administrators get a consolidated view of all network and isolated traffic. Isolation policies can be defined dynamically based on identity, security threats, or content categories—mirroring how Gateway already controls traffic by category. There is no separate console and no dedicated hardware to manage.
The Shift to Zero Trust Browsing
Executing unknown web code locally will continue to pose a serious threat to organizations. The transition to remote browsing is analogous to the move toward universal HTTPS encryption. Not long ago, HTTP was reserved for logins and checkouts, but it is now considered archaic for trusted sites. Cloudflare argues that trusting arbitrary website code on local devices will similarly become obsolete, replaced by the new paradigm of zero trust web browsing.
Cloudflare Browser Isolation is currently available as an add-on for Cloudflare for Teams Gateway and Teams standard plans. Contract customers can request access via the enterprise plan form.
