Baseline support data lands in two RUM tools
RUM Archive has released a new tool that shows worldwide browser support for specific Baseline versions, using real user monitoring data. The feature is now live on the RUM Insights page, and a similar integration is planned for RUMvision.
Baseline, launched last year by the WebDX Community Group alongside browser vendors, labels web platform features by how widely supported they are in major browsers. The classification already shows up on resources like MDN and Can I Use. Making that same data available in everyday development tools is the next step; the long-term goal is for IDEs, lintersand CI systems to flag features that fall outside a team's chosen Baseline target.
RUM Archive: real-world reach of Baseline choices
The RUM Archive dataset, published by Akamai, consists of real user monitoring data from live sites. Its RUM Insights page now lists Baseline support, showing the percentage of users whose browsers fall within the range of a selected Baseline version.
The same view lists the individual features included by any Baseline version you pick, which helps illustrate the tradeoffs involved in targeting a particular release. RUM Archive announced the addition on their blog.
RUMvision: audience-specific Baseline insight
RUMvision will soon incorporate Baseline data into its audience analytics. That should make it easier to evaluate how new features would affect your existing user base, and to plan redesigns or additions around what your visitors actually use.
More integrations to come
