From Static Reliance to a Faster Build Pipeline

Algolia’s five-person web team manages a steady stream of new features, pages, and blog content. Their previous setup—React on Gatsby—allowed them to ship pages quickly and serve them fast, but the infrastructure grew complex over time and build times climbed. That operational drag led them to evaluate Next.js and migrate their site to Vercel.

The switch was rapid and effective. The migration itself only took a few days, and the immediate payoff was a 50% cut in build times. Algolia software engineer Ronan Levesque credited the framework’s straightforward APIs for the smooth transition, noting the team was impressed by how coherent everything felt out of the box.

ISR as the Operational Lever

The team singled out Incremental Static Regeneration (ISR) as one of the most significant improvements. Instead of waiting for a full daily deploy to reflect changes across the organization’s many pages, content and site updates could be published on demand. This compressed feedback loops for developers working across multiple internal teams: instant updates replaced scheduled batch publishes.

Built-in features like Vercel Analytics plus the platform’s friendly interface reduced the amount of custom plumbing the team had to maintain. Optimizing third-party scripts also simplified performance management, allowing the engineers to focus more on delivering product work than babysitting the build system.

Looking Ahead with Next.js 12

With the infrastructure pain points removed, Algolia’s engineers plan to double down on site performance improvements using the newer capabilities coming in Next.js 12. The measured benefits—halved build times, quicker iteration cycles, and easier multi-team collaboration—have made the platform choice stick for their frontend stack.
