A global day of learning, no travel required
Major League Hacking’s (MLH) annual Local Hack Day: Learn returns on October 24 as an online, worldwide event aimed at getting developers—new and experienced alike—to set aside time for picking up new skills. The event is structured around workshops, talks and challenges, with a leaderboard to track participation and community standings.
The schedule is beginner-friendly by design. Sessions include building a Spark AR filter with Chris Gu, a discussion on technical interviewing and JavaScript with GitHub Campus Experts Shreya Prasad and Arsalan Khattak, and a capture-the-flag security round open to newcomers.
Workshops and rewards
Workshop topics span languages, frameworks, smart-home app development, blockchain and secure application design. Speakers come from the GitHub Campus Experts program, industry and the broader hacker community.
Beyond the technical content, attendees get free access to the GitHub Education Pack, which now includes over $200,000 in tools and training for student developers.
Participants can also compete for hacker swag. Forming a Guild lets teams earn points for attendance at workshops during the week before the event and on the day itself, climbing the leaderboard as they go. It is a practical route for community leaders to get their circles involved and a bit of friendly competition going.
