Fresh Wallpapers For July 2021

As the summer heats up, our monthly wallpaper collection returns with designs from artists around the world. Each wallpaper is available in versions with and without a calendar, and can be downloaded for free. This month’s artworks include a tribute to Nikola Tesla, as well as a reminder to balance work with play.

All artists retain full creative freedom over their designs; we don’t influence the themes. If you’re an artist interested in contributing to our next monthly collection, we’re always looking for creative talent. Join in!

This wallpaper honors Nikola Tesla, born July 10th 165 years ago. Tesla, an inventor, engineer, and futurist, brought electricity to the world and paved the way for wireless communication and modern energy production. Beyond his public discoveries, his life is full of mystery—his dream of free wireless energy and the disappearance of his records are still pondered today.

Designer Froukje from the Netherlands turned a simple summer association into a playful, romantic image.

“Well, if I think about the month July, the first thing what comes up is summer. So I wanted a theme about summer and I went looking on the internet for summer things. And after a few ideas, I saw a flamingo and I just started to draw some things. And I loved the idea that if you put two flamingos together like I did here, a heart shape will grow.” — Froukje

Evening Rides and Deep Space

July’s midpoint marks both the carnival season by night and a far quieter celestial event: the Earth’s annual aphelion. These two themes inspire very different designs this month.

Ricardo Gimenes from Sweden offers a more playful take. His illustration follows a cat riding a surfboard — a simple, sunny composition with no artist statement attached.

Space

Rosalie Toorians, also from the Netherlands, found her inspiration in the heliocentric calendar. Because July is the month when Earth reaches its greatest distance from the Sun, she designed a space-themed backdrop for the month.

Bogemans explains the inspiration: peaches remind her of travel and holiday joy, and she hopes the wallpaper delivers that same feeling throughout the month.

Stars And Stripes

For many, July is synonymous with the Fourth of July. The design team at Ever Increasing Circles (UK) pays tribute to the US Declaration of Independence with a patriotic wallpaper that captures the spirit of the holiday.

Designer Bibi Goelema from the Netherlands drew on the feeling of late summer evenings — that slow-setting-sun moment that lingers in the air — to create her contribution, a scene bathed in warm, dusk-like tones.

Goddesses Of July

Gigi Kim (gigikim.nl) pairs Artemis and Athena for a wallpaper rooted in July's mythological calendar. Artemis rules the zodiac sign Cancer, which falls in July, while Athena was traditionally honored in Athens during that same month. Kim's character designs draw inspiration from the webcomic Lore Olympus.

July Celebrations, Ancient and Modern

July carries a double historical weight: it marks the birth of the United States and bears the name of the Roman general who reordered the calendar. Two designers in this month's collection pay tribute to both lines of history.

An Independence Day Tribute with a Space Twist

Designer Jelle Guit from the Netherlands combines American Independence Day with his love of space exploration. The artwork ties the Apollo 11 moon landing to the 4th of July, bringing together two uniquely American moments of achievement. "I'm a huge space nerd and wanted to celebrate the Apollo 11 moon landing in tandem with Independence Day," Guit explains.

A Modern Take on a Roman Namesake

Serbian studio LibraFire approaches July from its etymological root: the month is named for Julius Caesar, and the team imagines the emperor taking a well-deserved vacation in the month that bears his name. The artwork gives the historical figure a contemporary holiday setting.

Designer Jorn Meijs captured a moment at Kronenburgerpark in Nijmegen, the Netherlands, for this month’s submission. The image is tied to Meijs’s hope for a return to pre-pandemic routines. As the designer notes, with coronavirus receding, “we can go back to the ‘old normal’ and do things we haven’t been able to do in over a year.” That sense of renewal translates into a deliberately colorful summer palette for daily desktop use.

July Fourth Motif

A class project produced this wallpaper from Jarno van der Linden. The Dutch student reports that participating in the Smashing Magazine wallpaper series was a group exercise: “Our teacher told us about the Smashing Magazine wallpapers. So we participated with our class to make a wallpaper.” The assignment has clear patriotic cues for the U.S. holiday at the start of the month.

July’s Automotive Artwork

Car illustration is the focus of this month’s wallpaper from Nick Geurds in the Netherlands. The designer’s personal interest in automotive art guided the style of this piece, which depicts the Bentley Bentayga Speed. The designer notes that the artwork was created for its own sake, with an anticipated release on July 1.
