Why Motion Matters in Interface Design
Designer and strategist Katie Swindler has spent years studying how movement shapes digital experiences. Her core argument is rooted in human evolution: our brains developed in a physical, three-dimensional world where motion carries meaning. Digital interfaces, by contrast, are flat and static by default. Adding animation helps bridge that gap, giving users "some of the benefits of a physical space represented—at least symbolically—in that digital space."
The result is that motion helps people form mental models more quickly. A classic example is the sliding drawer animation common in mobile interfaces. Just as a physical drawer opens and closes repeatedly with the same contents inside, the digital version signals intuitively that a menu or content panel can be toggled at will, and that what you find inside will remain consistent between visits.
Motion can also communicate states that would otherwise require text or visual clutter. A loading bar during a software update reassures users that work is progressing and will complete. A form field that shakes when a password is wrong mimics a headshake, prompting retry without a word. Pie charts and bar lines that "recalibrate" on a refreshed page signal that data is current.
Purpose Before Polish
Swindler is careful to distinguish purposeful motion from decorative animation. Microanimations—brief sequences that enliven a UI or guide a user through a flow—should be purpose-driven and solve a specific problem first. The same discipline applied to icon usage applies here: you don't add elements just to add them.
The bar for necessity is practical. In older backend systems, a one- to two-second transition can mask an unavoidable processing delay, making the product feel more responsive. When animation solves a problem like that, it earns its place.
The Best Animations Blend Speed With Clarity
What separates memorable motion from mediocre motion? Swindler points to a combination of practicality and personality. The best animations respect the user's time and avoid distraction while providing just enough visual information to orient them.
Her favorite example is what animation libraries call the "sprout" animation, though she thinks of it as "The Genie In The Bottle." Apple uses it when minimizing windows: the window appears to get sucked down into its dock icon at the bottom of the screen. Click the icon again, and the animation reverses, the window sprouting back up. It is fast, subtle, and instantly communicates both where the window went and how to retrieve it.
Accessibility and Restraint Are Non-Negotiable
The most common mistake Swindler sees is making animation a requirement for using a product. "You don't want to create something that requires animation in order for the user experience to work, because then you're cutting out a huge swath of people," she says. Users with epilepsy, for example, can be triggered by certain types of movement.
Beyond accessibility, poorly chosen motion simply wears on users. Animations that bounce frenetically around a page may not trigger conscious irritation, but they degrade brand affinity over time. Users can feel the busyness even when they can't name it. Each animation deserves care and restraint—it should solve the user's problem in the most elegant way possible, not add clutter.
Designing Motion Is a Team Sport
Motion is notoriously difficult to get right on the first try, especially during rapid feature development. Since animation specs are essentially two-dimensional documents describing a time-based behavior, designs rarely translate perfectly into the final product.
Swindler's advice: treat animation as a cross-disciplinary effort. The best results come when design and development sensibilities carry equal weight. If one person possesses both skill sets, great. If not, designers should trust developers with animation expertise, bringing them into the process as full members of the design team rather than relegating them to implementation details. The people writing the code ultimately choose the speed of the swoops and the curve bands—they need to understand the design intent to execute it well.
Trends Run in Cycles
Like every other facet of design, motion experiences trend cycles. As new animation techniques become easier to implement, designers adopt them enthusiastically, then tire of them and strip back to essentials. Swindler expects the cycle to continue: "There will be advancements in animations that allow us to do cool things, we'll have another bloom, and then it'll once again get stripped back down to what really matters."
